For his final taping as the host of The Late Show, Stephen Colbert thanked his fans for their “reciprocal emotional relationship” over the last eleven years. “This show has been a joy for us to do for you. In fact, we call this show the joy machine… to do this many shows, it has to be a machine,” Colbert explained in a two-minute clip shared on YouTube one hour before the final show. “If you choose to do this with joy, it doesn’t hurt your fingers as much when your fingers get caught in the gears.” He then shared how much the behind-the-scenes crew really values and supports one another as they make the program happen every night. Colbert thanks the audience for feeling the emotions of the news with them. Band leader Louis Cato then added that their relationship to their fans felt like a “reciprocal emotional relationship.” As the warm-up segment was coming to a close, Colbert gave his final message to the studio audience one last time: “Thanks for being here, and let’s do this, y’all!”
