Steam has reached a new high in early 2024, with more people playing games on the platform simultaneously than ever before. SteamDB reports a peak of over 41.8 million concurrent users, and a record-breaking 13.4 million were actively playing games – a slight increase from the 13.2 million recorded in March.
It’s no surprise this happened right as the Steam Winter Sale is ending! They had some amazing deals on tons of games, both old favorites and newer titles. Honestly, these sales always bring everyone back to Steam – you see a lot of familiar names and people grabbing games they’ve been meaning to get all year. It definitely gets more people playing!
Steam has been growing consistently for over ten years, but its popularity has increased dramatically recently. A big jump happened in early 2020 when lockdowns due to COVID-19 caused over 23 million people to use the platform at the same time, a number that climbed to 28 million within two years. Steam also offered a collection of games to support COVID-19 relief efforts. Since then, the popularity of games with ongoing updates and consistently strong sales, particularly around the holidays, have kept players engaged. Games like Arc Riders continue to thrive, with over 3 million players online this week.
Steam recently hit a new record for simultaneous users after almost 17 years of growth. This growth has been particularly rapid in the last six years, with the number of peak users nearly doubling. This success comes at a complex time for Valve, as the company has also received criticism regarding its handling of content moderation and censorship.
It will be fascinating to observe how these figures shift when the Steam Machine is released later this year.
