Eric Barone, the creator of Stardew Valley and known as ConcernedApe, has reassured fans that he’s still working on Haunted Chocolatier. He confirmed that the game is still in development and he has no intention of stopping work on it.
On January 28th, ConcernedApe posted an update about the progress of Haunted Chocolatier on the game’s official website.
I’ve been making good progress on Haunted Chocolatier recently, but it’s taking longer to finish than expected. I realize announcing the game so early might have been a mistake, but I had my reasons for doing so.
The blog post then went on to tackle some common misunderstandings about the new simulation game, and set the record straight about its development.
ConcernedApe responds to Haunted Chocolatier rumors
Rumors started that Haunted Chocolatier might be cancelled and its ideas combined with Stardew Valley, but the developer quickly clarified, “That’s not true. I’m definitely not abandoning Haunted Chocolatier.”
Barone explained that even if development on the game stopped completely, it wouldn’t be combined with Stardew Valley.

He clarified that the two games, Haunted Chocolatier and Stardew Valley, are built using completely different technology. Haunted Chocolatier wasn’t created by modifying Stardew Valley; it was developed entirely from the ground up, using a different game engine. He emphasized that code from one game can’t simply be transferred to the other.
Barone also clarified that updates to Stardew Valley aren’t experiments for his new game, Haunted Chocolatier. He explained that he continues to update Stardew Valley because of its continued success and the increasing number of players.
Barone also clarified a rumor claiming Haunted Chocolatier wouldn’t be released until 2030. He explained this came from a misinterpretation of his statements from 2025, when he was asked if the game would launch within five years.
He explained he’d said ‘I hope so,’ but clarified that wasn’t a confirmation of a release year. Barone emphasized he’s not going to announce a release date and will launch the game only when it’s fully finished.
Just a quick update: I’m still working on the game and it’s progressing well. It will be released when it’s fully polished and ready. Thanks for continuing to be patient!
