John Boyega, who won a Golden Globe and is known for playing Finn in the recent Star Wars films, has been discussing how the Star Wars and Star Trek franchises differ. He last appeared as Finn in 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker, where, after Leia’s death, his character became a general alongside Poe Dameron, leading the Resistance.
What did John Boyega say about Star Wars and Star Trek?
At Dragon Con, John Boyega explained that he’s unlikely to ever appear in a Star Trek project, as he feels a strong connection to Star Wars. He does think Star Wars fans could benefit from the way Star Trek encourages conversation and discussion among its fanbase. Despite some past issues with how the story of his character, Finn, was developed, Boyega remains a dedicated fan of George Lucas’ Star Wars saga.
John Boyega, a longtime Star Wars fan, explained that he’s often jokingly teased by Star Trek fans at conventions. He admits he’s not a fan of Star Trek, pointing out that Star Wars fans tend to be more focused on doing things, while Star Trek fans enjoy discussing the show. He believes Star Wars fans are more proactive and engaged, especially when it feels like there’s a lot happening with the franchise.
He explained that Star Trek often allows characters time for meaningful conversations, something he thinks Star Wars could benefit from. As for potentially appearing in Star Trek, he stated he remains loyal to the Star Wars franchise, identifying himself as a ‘lightsaber guy.’
Now that Daisy Ridley is confirmed to return as Rey in a new Star Wars film, fans have been speculating about whether John Boyega will reprise his role as Finn. The movie, which comes from respected filmmakers Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy and Steven Knight (creator of Peaky Blinders), is set about 15 years after the events of the 2019 film. Details about the story, characters, and when it will be released are currently being kept secret.
