Square Enix is probably going to face criticism from gamers again. They recently shared their future plans while discussing their financial performance, and it seems their earlier statements about heavily investing in artificial intelligence (AI) are coming true. Square Enix wants AI in the QA testing
Square Enix is exploring ways to use artificial intelligence to improve and automate its game testing processes. According to VGC, the company has launched a project, in collaboration with researchers from the University of Tokyo, to develop AI-powered tools for game quality assurance. A team of Square Enix engineers will lead the effort.
If all goes well, Square Enix expects AI to handle around 70% of its quality assurance tasks by 2027. The company hopes this will make operations more efficient and help them stay ahead of competitors in game development. This announcement comes at a time when concerns are rising about potential job losses due to the increasing use of AI.
Square Enix is laying off people in its western branches
During a recent video conference, Square Enix CEO Takashi Kiryu announced significant changes to their offices outside of Japan. These changes are designed to make the company more adaptable, but will likely require employees to return to in-office work more frequently, effectively ending the current remote work arrangement.
The company hasn’t announced any specific layoff numbers. However, VGC reports that around 140 employees in the London office have been warned they could lose their jobs. These potential layoffs aren’t limited to the quality assurance team; staff in IT, marketing, and publishing are also affected.
Square Enix often tries to capitalize on current trends, and this approach may frustrate players. A few years ago, for example, they explored creating their own NFTs, following that popular trend.
