Okay, so this is crazy! Spotify is suing someone because they claim over 256 million music files – basically 86 million songs – were illegally taken from their service. It’s like someone straight-up stole a huge chunk of their library, and they’re not happy about it. As a gamer who uses Spotify all the time, I’m glad they’re taking action to protect the music we all love.
On December 23, 2025, Spotify began looking into Anna’s Archive after it collected 300TB of data – around 256 million audio files – and claimed this represented nearly all music listened to on the platform (99.6%).
One month after the initial reports, Spotify and the three major record labels – Universal, Warner, and Sony – are now taking legal action against Anna’s Archive. They are seeking up to $13 trillion in damages.
The legal case was initially made public on January 16, 2026, as reported by Music Business Worldwide, though it was officially filed on December 26, 2026. The claim asserts that extensive and unlawful copyright violations could severely damage the music industry.
Spotify seeking $13 trillion in damages from Anna’s Archive
Anna’s Archive is an online library aiming to become the most open and comprehensive in history. It started by offering access to millions of books and is now expanding to include music as well.

The key thing to understand about Anna’s Archive is how it works. It doesn’t actually store any files itself. Instead of offering illegal downloads of books or music, it directs users to other websites that host those files. Basically, it’s a search engine that helps you find content hosted elsewhere.
However, the lawsuit argues that those affected could receive significant financial compensation – as much as $150,000 for each copyrighted work. This potentially adds up to the claimed $13 trillion, considering the number of songs involved.
They called it a massive, illegal grab of almost every commercial sound recording worldwide, accusing Anna’s Archive and those running it of being lawless internet pirates.
Anna’s Archive has not publicly addressed the matter since the lawsuit was filed.
