Spotify adds ‘Verified’ badge for human artists amid AI music boom

Spotify is launching a new artist verification process to help listeners know they’re listening to the real artist, especially with the rise of AI-generated music.

Spotify is now adding a “Verified by Spotify” badge to artist profiles, along with new features that give fans more information about what artists are up to.

This update is part of Spotify’s ongoing effort to be more transparent. They’ve recently added features like SongDNA, more detailed song credits, an ‘About the Song’ section, and are now disclosing when AI was used in music creation.

Spotify adds new verification badge for artists

Spotify is introducing a new badge, “Verified by Spotify,” which will be displayed on artist profiles that have been confirmed as genuine and trustworthy by the platform.

Spotify requires artists seeking verification to demonstrate ongoing listener activity, follow platform rules, and prove they are genuine musicians. This proof can include details like upcoming concerts, merchandise offerings, and connections to their social media profiles.

When it comes to verification, accounts that mostly showcase AI-created art or pretend to be AI artists won’t be eligible right away. The company will be using both automated checks and real people to make sure artists are genuine and acting honestly before granting verification.

Spotify is testing a new feature called “Artist Profile Protection” that lets artists better manage what shows up on their pages. This helps stop incorrect or unofficial content from appearing.

Rollout and availability

Over the next few weeks, you’ll start seeing a light green checkmark and a “Verified by Spotify” label on artist profiles and when you search for them. This badge confirms their authenticity.

Spotify announced that at launch, over 99% of artists people search for on the platform will be verified. This covers hundreds of thousands of musicians from all genres, locations, and stages of their careers, with most of them being independent artists.

Profile verification is happening gradually, so not everyone will see the verified badge right away.

Spotify is testing a new artist profile section that will be visible to everyone, whether or not the artist is verified. This is in addition to their existing verification process.

This section will showcase an artist’s career highlights, including new releases and tour dates, so users can easily see what they’ve been up to on the platform.

As a Spotify user, I’m really excited about this new feature! It’s like a ‘nutrition label’ for artists – a quick way to see how active they are and get a sense of their overall presence on the platform. You’ll be able to find it on an artist’s ‘About’ page in the app, or right on the banner for artists who are verified.

In early April, a song created using artificial intelligence – but with lyrics written by a person – became a number one hit on iTunes.
