Alfred Molina, famous for his role as Doctor Octopus in the Spider-Man films directed by Sam Raimi, is taking on a unique challenge: he’s playing an octopus in an upcoming Netflix movie, trading in his robotic arms for the real deal.
Alfred Molina first portrayed the famous villain Doctor Octopus in the 2004 film Spider-Man 2. His performance was instantly recognized and has made him one of the most memorable villains in superhero movie history.
The anticipation for his comeback in Spider-Man: No Way Home was huge, as he joined other iconic villains like Willem Dafoe’s Green Goblin, Jamie Foxx’s Electro, and Thomas Haden Church’s Sandman. It was especially exciting because Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield also returned as Spider-Man.
Alfred Molina won’t be returning as Doc Ock, and there aren’t any plans for a multiverse storyline right now. However, he is taking on a new role that seems perfect for him.
Doctor Octopus actor playing an octopus in new Netflix movie
In the movie Remarkably Bright Creatures, the actor is providing the voice for Marcellus, a very smart octopus. The film is based on Shelby Van Pelt’s 2022 novel of the same title, and tells the story of an unexpected friendship between a woman who is mourning a loss and a Giant Pacific octopus.
Sally Field, known for her role in Mrs. Doubtfire, will play the character of Tova. Lewis Pullman, currently appearing in Thunderbolts, will play Cameron, a troubled musician.
This story, inspired by the popular novel by Shelby Van Pelt, centers around Tova, a woman who finds an unexpected connection with Marcellus, a grumpy but lovable giant Pacific octopus at the aquarium where she works.
Tova doesn’t realize that Marcellus is trying to uncover a secret – one that could help her overcome her grief and ultimately change her life.

The latest Netflix film arrives on May 8th, and fans are amused to see actor Molina playing an octopus, following his previous role as Doc Ock.
Social media users were amused to discover Alfred Molina is voicing an octopus, with one commenting, “I just realized Alfred Molina is voicing an octopus!” Another pointed out, “Can’t believe he’s playing an octopus again!” and a third joked it was perfect typecasting.
Someone joked that if they got a nickel for every time Alfred Molina played a character connected to octopuses, they’d have two nickels – not much money, but a strange coincidence considering it’s happened twice.
