According to a recent report, Sony and Marvel Studios disagreed on who should direct the next Spider-Man movie, Spider-Man 4.
What did Sony and Marvel clash over Spider-Man 4 about?
I was really fascinated to read a new report from My Time to Shine – they’re usually spot-on with this stuff! Apparently, Sony’s Tom Rothman was a big fan of Jon Watts, the director who brought us the last three Spider-Man movies with Marvel, and initially wanted him back for the next one. But when it became clear Watts wasn’t going to return, Rothman already had another director in mind.
According to the report, Rothman suggested Ruben Fleischer, the director of Venom, for the project. However, Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige preferred Destin Daniel Cretton, who ultimately took on the directing role.
The next Spider-Man movie, directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, is being written by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers. Tom Holland will be back as Peter Parker/Spider-Man, and Zendaya and Jacob Batalon are also expected to reprise their roles.
The film will also feature appearances by Sadie Sink from “Stranger Things,” Liza Colón-Zayas of “The Bear,” Jon Bernthal, and J.C. MacKenzie, among other cast members. Kevin Feige, Amy Pascal, Rachel O’Connor, and Avi Arad are producing the movie.
The next Spider-Man movie is scheduled to come out in US cinemas on July 31, 2026, before the releases of Avengers: Doomsday on December 18, 2026, and Avengers: Secret Wars on December 17, 2027.
