Space X founder’s bonus only kicks in if mankind colonizes mars

SpaceX‘s recent filings show that Elon Musk’s compensation includes achieving the ambitious goal of sending humans to Mars.

Elon Musk has openly discussed his goal of establishing a colony on Mars. He believes this is crucial for humanity’s future, pointing to potential disasters on Earth that could wipe out life and arguing that we need to become a species that lives on more than one planet.

SpaceX, the company he started, is a private business focused on space travel. They’re working to create rockets that can be used again and again, making space travel more affordable, and ultimately, helping people live on other planets. Their recent steps toward becoming a publicly traded company show this goal is a major priority.

Mars is 140 million miles (225 million km) away

A particularly interesting part of the proposal details how Elon Musk can earn a bonus. According to Phys.org, it depends on SpaceX’s stock value reaching between $400 billion and $6 trillion, but most importantly, on the company successfully transporting 1 million people to Mars.

Rather than a traditional salary, Musk would earn more company stock. If the initial public offering is successful, his current shares would be worth approximately $735 billion, based on the company’s anticipated value of $1.75 trillion.

SpaceX officially began the process to become a publicly traded company on Wednesday, May 20th. If successful, its stock listing on the Nasdaq could be the biggest initial public offering ever seen on Wall Street.

SpaceX is planning to launch Starship, a rocket created to help people eventually live on Mars. It’s designed to carry large numbers of people and supplies needed to build a colony there.
