Sorry, But I’m Already Too Hyped for the Elden Ring Movie

I hadn’t really given much thought to Alex Garland’s Elden Ring movie because it seemed so distant. With other exciting films like James Gray’s upcoming project and The Odyssey on the way, it felt like something far off. But then photos surfaced of what appeared to be a set piece—a Church of Marika—being built in England, and suddenly it all felt very real. The news that A24 is releasing the film on March 3, 2028—right before the Oscars—only amplified that feeling. They also announced a fantastic cast, including Garland regulars like Kit Connor, Cailee Spaeny, Sonoya Mizuno, and Nick Offerman, plus actors like Ben Whishaw, Tom Burke, and Havana Rose Liu, who I’m excited to hear voicing video game lines. Then, fans spotted someone dressed as a Leyndell Knight at a naval college in London. It was like a switch flipped. I went from vaguely curious to incredibly eager to see this movie.

As fans analyze early photos and speculate about the cast, the biggest question is whether director Garland can do justice to the source material. Adapting a popular property like Elden Ring always sets a high bar, but it’s hard to agree on exactly what that standard should be. While casting real actors – like Connor O’Malley potentially as the lead and Emma Laird appearing as Marika – adds credibility, the story of Elden Ring itself is notoriously complex and difficult to follow. A truly faithful adaptation of the game’s ‘plot’ would involve characters endlessly reading lengthy descriptions of items and their origins. However, Garland’s previous work, such as Annihilation and Men, demonstrates a knack for dialogue that is both subtle and direct, much like the cryptic conversations in Elden Ring. This adaptation shouldn’t feel like traditional fantasy like Lord of the Rings or King Arthur. Instead, it should capture the disorienting, oppressive feeling of being lost and overwhelmed, similar to the first few hours of playing Elden Ring without prior experience with the Soulsborne genre.

As a huge film and gaming fan, seeing the Elden Ring sets is seriously blowing my mind – it’s making me want to jump right back into that 400-hour game! I totally skipped all the lore details the first time around, just wanting to challenge myself with bosses like Malenia, so I’m really excited to finally piece the story together. It’s also hilarious to picture someone trying to explain the whole world of Elden Ring to Ben Whishaw – he just feels like a Peter Hujar character! We’re still a ways off from seeing Garland’s full vision on screen, instead of just fan theories online, but one thing is definitely on my mind: Where’s Torrent, the spectral steed?!
