Be warned, this article contains spoilers for the season 3 finale of Shrinking, specifically episode 10, “The Bodyguard of Sadness.” When Shrinking returns for its fourth season, expect some significant changes to the show.
Apple TV+’s Shrinking, created by Bill Lawrence, Jason Segel, and Brett Goldstein, has earned critical praise for its honest and funny look at mental health. The show starts with Jimmy (Jason Segel), a therapist dealing with his wife’s death, who begins to tell his patients exactly what’s on his mind. While initially planned for three seasons, the series was surprisingly renewed for a fourth, leaving viewers curious about where the story will go.
On X (formerly Twitter), Lawrence shared an Apple TV clip of Gaby (Jessica Williams) excitedly talking about The Lord of the Rings. He reminded everyone that the current season, and the story’s three-season arc, will conclude next week, hoping viewers enjoy it. Lawrence also expressed his excitement about starting a completely new story next year, describing it as both scary and fun. He ended by thanking viewers. In a follow-up post, Lawrence clarified that there will be a Season 4, and it will feature the same cast, explaining that this was a key reason for continuing the show – they all enjoy working together.
Jason Segel confirmed that Shrinking won’t continue the story originally planned for three seasons; instead, season 4 will introduce a completely new narrative. He admits this is a gamble, but the show will still feature the same beloved cast, including Jimmy, Gaby, Paul (Harrison Ford), Alice (Lukita Maxwell), Sean (Luke Tennie), Liz (Christa Miller), Derek (Ted McGinley), Brian (Michael Urie), and other familiar faces.
The season 3 finale of Shrinking introduces big life changes for everyone. Paul is retiring and moving to Connecticut to be closer to family, while Alice is off to Wesleyan University after graduating high school. Brian and Charlie (Devin Kawaoka) are heading to New Mexico for three months with their baby, and Sean is switching careers, closing his food truck to become a sous-chef. Meanwhile, Liz and Derek are excited to become grandparents, and Gaby is evolving her therapy practice to focus on trauma care.
Most of the characters have reached a clear conclusion to their stories, with possibilities for what comes next. However, Jimmy is still facing difficulties. He’s at a tough moment after his breakup with Sofi, another disappointment from his father, and feeling isolated from everyone around him – culminating in a tense argument with Paul before moving. The final episode of season three is expected to address Jimmy’s issues with abandonment, resolve his conflict with Paul, and reveal his future, as this will conclude the show’s planned three-season arc. It’s a lot to cover in just one episode, though.
With the current cast, the show might divide its focus between two locations. One storyline could follow characters in California, potentially allowing Brian and his family to return if there’s a significant time jump. The other storyline would center around Alice, Paul, Paul’s daughter Meg, and possibly new characters in Connecticut. Friends and family of Jimmy and Alice, like those at Wesleyan with Alice, could visit Paul, and Alice might be able to return to California during breaks and the summer.
The Shrinking season 3 finale releases on Apple TV on Wednesday, April 8.
