People are sharing a lot of enthusiastic opinions online about the new trailer for Shrek 5.
The next Shrek movie isn’t expected to hit cinemas until June 2027, but DreamWorks recently released a short preview trailer. This fifth film in the popular animated series—which started in the early 2000s—has already received some negative feedback for changing how certain characters look.
Reactions to the Shrek 5 trailer are all over the place. X user @Schaffrillas commented that it feels like the trailer is forcing edginess, unlike the natural humor of the first Shrek movies.
Many viewers disliked the updated character designs, with one user, @ArtofSpongebob, pointing out they resembled a typical Disney film. They also felt Donkey’s performance was like a generic, cartoonish Disney character, drawing a comparison to Sven from Frozen.
According to reports, the Shrek films were designed to feel somewhat gritty and authentic, and to playfully mock Disney stories rather than simply imitate them.
It’s been more than 15 years since the last Shrek movie, Shrek Forever After, came out. User @gardenoutro joked that the trailer felt like the filmmakers were making a sequel after a long time simply from what they remembered.
Aside from the four existing Shrek movies, DreamWorks also made two Puss in Boots spinoff films.
The latest Puss in Boots movie, The Last Wish, featured a fresh animation style. Twitter user @Garen_art believes DreamWorks should have used this same style for the upcoming Shrek 5, stating that everything shown from the new Shrek film looks outdated and like it hasn’t been updated in over a decade.
Some fans have expressed more excitement about the upcoming Donkey movie than they have for Shrek 5.
The new designs weren’t universally disliked. Twitter user @NitroSpidey, for example, praised DreamWorks for sticking to their vision and not bowing to criticism. They wrote, “They look fine, way better in motion,” and pointed out that the new trailer was a clear improvement over the earlier teaser that had drawn negative reactions.
On the other hand, @BlueR00n had a more positive reaction to the trailer, calling it “not so bad, actually a great trailer.” They also appreciated the playful suggestions and the character of Donkey.
Like others, @Scrat_Facts_ feels cautiously hopeful about the movie after watching the trailer. They aren’t sure if the film will be good overall, but the teaser did pique their interest – they’re not completely convinced yet, but it has them wanting to learn more.
It was also fun to see @bremaonline enjoying the Gingerbread Man’s makeover in the trailer, especially his funny line, “I’m caked up like a freakin’ bakery!”
The movie Shrek, released by DreamWorks in 2001 and based on a book by William Steig, was a huge success. It earned nearly $490 million worldwide, received an 89% ‘Fresh’ rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, and even won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.
Three years after the first film, a sequel was released that proved even more popular with audiences, earning more money at the box office. Critics also rated it the same as the original, according to Rotten Tomatoes.
As a huge Shrek fan, I remember when the third movie came out in 2007 – it made loads of money at the box office, but honestly, it was the first one critics really didn’t like. Rotten Tomatoes gave it just a 41% score! Then, Shrek Forever After arrived in 2010 and while people liked it a little more, reviews were still pretty divided; it wasn’t quite the triumph everyone hoped for.
After that, DreamWorks focused on films featuring Puss in Boots. Both Puss in Boots and Puss in Boots: The Last Wish were praised by critics and helped revitalize the series, even earning nominations for the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.
A fifth Shrek movie is in the works, bringing back stars Mike Myers as Shrek, Eddie Murphy as Donkey, and Cameron Diaz as Princess Fiona. Joining them is Zendaya, who will voice Shrek and Fiona’s daughter, alongside Marcello Hernández and Skyler Gisondo as their sons.
Walt Dohrn and Conrad Vernon are directing Shrek 5, with Brad Ableson helping as a co-director. Michael McCullers is responsible for the screenplay, and Gina Shay and Christopher Meledandri are producing the film.
As a big Shrek fan, I’ve been following news about the fifth movie, and it’s been a bit of a rollercoaster! It’s already been delayed a few times, and last fall, when they showed off some new character designs – even a redesigned Shrek! – a lot of us were worried it wasn’t a good change. Now that the first trailer is out, it’s a mixed bag. Some fans are feeling pretty down about it, but others are hopeful that Shrek 5 could still be great. I’m trying to stay optimistic, but it’s definitely got me thinking!
Shrek 5 will be released in theaters on Wednesday, June 30, 2026.
