Hundreds of stolen cats rescued as cops bust group selling animals for food

Vietnamese police have recovered over 40 stolen cats and returned them to their owners after dismantling a ring that was reportedly selling the animals for consumption.

BBC News reports that police in southern Vietnam have arrested nine individuals suspected of stealing and hoarding cats.

During a recent operation, authorities saved over 400 cats. Sadly, they also discovered 80 cats that had died and were frozen. In addition, police found and took custody of 21 more cats from another location.

Investigators believe the animals were being kept to be sold for meat, and that the suspects had been attracting and capturing cats using traps for about three years.

According to The Times of India, the group was selling the animals for approximately 70,000 Vietnamese dong per kilogram, with sales happening every couple of days.

Stolen cats reunited with owners after police raid

After word got out about the police operation, many cat owners went to the Ho Chi Minh City police station hoping to find their lost pets.

One woman, Quach Thi Lan Anh, was reunited with both of her stolen cats after the rescue.

I couldn’t believe it when I found both of my cats! I’m so grateful to the Ho Chi Minh City police for helping me reunite with them.

Unfortunately, some pet owners weren’t reunited with their animals. For example, Tuan Minh reported that his British Shorthair had been missing for about two weeks and wasn’t found in the group of recovered cats.

He explained that he’d been really worried ever since his cat disappeared, hoping someone had found it and that it was safe.

Approximately 100 of the rescued cats sadly died due to the severe conditions they had suffered. Humane World for Animals provided food and cooling fans while police worked to find the cats’ owners.

Phuong Pham, the Vietnam country director for Humane World for Animals, praised the large seizure and quick police response as a positive move in efforts to stop illegal wildlife trading.

Although it’s legal to eat dog and cat meat in Vietnam, sellers must prove the animals were sourced legally with proper documentation.

This problem continues to happen in places like China. Just recently, a well-known Border Collie – who had gained over 1.58 million followers online – was stolen and tragically ended up being sold to a restaurant that serves dog meat.
