That popular trailer for Shenmue 4 isn’t real, unfortunately. Ys Net, the company founded by the game’s creator Yu Suzuki, has confirmed it’s a fake and suggested they might take legal steps against the person who made it.
Ys Net announced on social media that a fake trailer for Shenmue 4 used their logo without permission, leading people to believe it was an official video. They confirmed that no official Shenmue 4 footage has been released and that they are taking action, including considering legal options, against the person who made the trailer.

Originally released in 1999 for the Sega Dreamcast, Shenmue put players in the role of Ryo Hazuki, a young man determined to find his father’s killer. The game was groundbreaking for its open-world design and use of quicktime events, which heavily influenced future games. A sequel, Shenmue 2, came out in 2001, but the series stalled due to disappointing sales.
After Yu Suzuki left Sega, he successfully funded and released Shenmue 3 in 2019. Recently, Inin Games and Suzuki announced Shenmue 3 Enhanced, which is coming to PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo consoles. This updated version will have improved graphics, including higher-resolution textures for environments and characters, and more people walking around to make the game world feel more vibrant.
A group of passionate Shenmue fans tried to make Shenmue 4 happen last year by buying an ad in Times Square, New York. Whether or not this effort will result in a new game in the series is still unknown.
