Scarlett Johansson is openly discussing the legal battle she had with Disney after the movie Black Widow was released in theaters and on their streaming service, Disney+, at the same time. This simultaneous release led to a disagreement over how much money she earned from the film’s box office success. In a recent interview, Johansson mentioned she wished more of her colleagues had publicly supported her during the dispute.
Scarlett Johansson would have liked more support over her Disney lawsuit
Scarlett Johansson has been discussing the lawsuit she filed against Disney in 2021, expressing her disappointment that more people in the industry didn’t publicly support her. The dispute started when Disney decided to release her movie, Black Widow, both in theaters and on their streaming service, Disney+, at the same time due to the pandemic. This change impacted her potential earnings, as her bonus was tied to how well the movie performed in theaters, so she took legal action. The case was reportedly settled for $40 million.
As a longtime movie fan, I was reading an interview with Scarlett Johansson in The Telegraph, and she made a really good point. She was saying it would have meant a lot to her – and honestly, to a lot of us in the industry – to see more public support from other actors when important issues come up. It’s just good to hear more voices speaking out, you know? She also added that even one person taking a stand can actually make a difference, which I totally agree with.
Johansson explained that the streaming industry is facing confusion due to a lack of clear rules and standards. She emphasized that this ambiguity needed to be addressed, as the shift from traditional box office bonuses to streaming revenue created uncertainty. She believes establishing guidelines would be a positive step and expressed hope for increased support in developing those standards.
Black Widow made $379 million around the world, with a production budget of approximately $200 million. The film, directed by Cate Shortland, focuses on Natasha Romanoff dealing with issues from her past.
