Russell Crowe, the Academy Award-winning star of Gladiator, is returning to action roles after nearly 30 years. He’s set to star in a reboot of Highlander and recently shared a sneak peek from the set, hinting at his physical transformation. The 62-year-old actor, who has visibly changed his physique for roles in films like Unhinged and Nuremberg, seems to be taking inspiration from Henry Cavill – his co-star in both Highlander and Man of Steel – as he prepares for the physically demanding role, including lots of sword fighting.
Russell Crowe recently posted on social media, referencing the iconic line “There can be only one” from the movie Highlander. He’s hinting at a return to his physically imposing form, as he’s taking on the role of Juan Sánchez-Villalobos Ramírez in the Highlander reboot – a character previously played by Sean Connery, and one that will see him acting as an immortal mentor.
Russell Crowe is preparing for a return to action roles, as shown in a recent photo. He’ll be acting alongside Henry Cavill, known for The Witcher, and is training hard to match Cavill’s action skills and learn sword fighting similar to the style seen in the John Wick movies.

The new Highlander film is directed by Chad Stahelski, known for John Wick, and written by Kerry Williamson and Mike Finch. It boasts a star-studded cast, bringing together actors Henry Cavill has worked with before, such as Russell Crowe (who played his father in a previous film) and Jeremy Irons, who will portray a member of “The Watchers” – a group tracking immortals, originally featured in Highlander: The Series. The film also includes MCU veterans Karen Gillan and Djimon Hounsou, while Dave Bautista will play the villain, The Kurgan.
Highlander does not yet have a release date but will be released by Amazon MGM Studios.
