Production for Season 3 is progressing well and will include a considerable leap forward in time. The future of the Amazon Prime Video series, which is based on the writings of J.R.R. Tolkien, is currently unclear after the third season. However, a recent report indicates that Amazon would face substantial financial penalties if it were to cancel the show.
According to a report by Lesley Goldberg of The Ankler, Amazon could lose a significant amount of money if The Rings of Power doesn’t last until Season 5. The report details that the agreement with the Tolkien estate requires five seasons and 50 episodes of The Rings of Power . Canceling the show early would result in Amazon having to pay a cancellation fee of $20 million for each remaining season.
I was reading The Ankler’s latest report, and it’s really digging into what’s going on with Prime Video right now. It seems like they’re facing some hurdles, and it’s interesting timing with Peter Friedlander, who used to be at Netflix, stepping in as the new Head of Global Television. The report also mentioned how expensive The Rings of Power has been – apparently, it’s costing around half a billion dollars *per season*!
The Rings of Power has received its share of criticism for making changes to the original story and characters. There’s a noticeable difference in opinion about the show, as both Season 1 and Season 2 have earned an 84% “Certified Fresh” rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes. However, viewer scores are considerably lower: Season 1 received a 38% audience score, and Season 2 scored a 59% on the same platform.
The Ratings for Rings of Power Have Been Lackluster
Viewership numbers indicate that interest in The Rings of Power wasn’t as high as expected. The data shows that only 37% of viewers in the U.S. finished the first season. Internationally, 45% of those who began watching completed Season 1. However, both of these figures fell short of the 50% completion rate that Amazon executives had hoped for, particularly considering they spent $250 million to acquire the rights to the franchise. The show didn’t perform as consistently well as other Prime hits like The Boys or Reacher.
The Rings of Power finished its second season in October 2024. The upcoming third season will feature a significant leap forward in time, showing Sauron (Charlie Vickers) forging the One Ring. According to the official description, Season 3 will begin several years after the events of Season 2, during the peak of the war between the Elves and Sauron. The Dark Lord is determined to create the One Ring, hoping it will give him the advantage he needs to win the war and finally take control of all of Middle-earth.
The first two seasons of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power are streaming on Prime Video.
