Krafton is offering employees a chance to voluntarily resign with support, as part of a new company strategy.
Most game developers and players aren’t excited about the current push for AI. While developers recognize the technology’s possibilities, many are concerned, especially with recent reports of layoffs supposedly caused by a shift towards artificial intelligence. Critics fear this could have serious negative effects on the industry.
Krafton “supports” employees in the “era of AI transformation”
Krafton, a Korean gaming company, is likely to become a cautionary tale about the use of AI and automation. After announcing plans to heavily incorporate AI, they’ve offered their employees a voluntary resignation package. Starting yesterday, employees who choose to leave the company will receive severance pay ranging from six to thirty-six months’ salary, based on their years of service.
So, I was reading about this, and apparently, it’s not a layoff situation, at least according to the company. They’re saying they want to help employees figure out what they want to do next, especially with AI changing everything. They’re framing it as a way to support people in finding new opportunities, either within the company or even somewhere else. And the best part? They claim it’s completely voluntary – employees get to decide if they want to be involved!
It’s hard to interpret these statements as anything other than a signal for layoffs, and they’re unlikely to convince anyone otherwise. This is especially notable considering Krafton recently had its most profitable quarter ever, with operating profits exceeding one trillion South Korean won – nearly 590 million euros.
On November 4th, Krafton’s Chief Financial Officer, Bae Dong-geun, announced the company had paused all new hiring.
