Quentin Tarantino Told Brad Pitt He’d Be “Dead In This Business” During Heated On-Set Moment

Quentin Tarantino and Brad Pitt collaborated on two films, but a tense argument during the making of their second project led Tarantino to reportedly tell Pitt he wouldn’t have a lasting career.

Brad Pitt and Quentin Tarantino worked together again in 2019’s Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood, after first collaborating on the 2009 film Inglourious Basterds. Despite the film being a critical and award-winning success, making it was challenging. There were reportedly disagreements on set when Pitt took initiative on a scene without Tarantino’s consent.

I was reading an interview with Bruce Dern about his time filming Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood, and he shared a pretty wild story about working with Brad Pitt. Apparently, during one of their scenes, Bruce ad-libbed a line. Brad, being the pro he is, immediately called ‘cut!’ because it wasn’t in the script. But Quentin Tarantino was not pleased. Bruce said Quentin gave Pitt this incredibly serious, almost menacing look and warned him never to do that again, threatening his career if he did. It sounds like a really intense moment on set!

In ‘Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood,’ Brad Pitt woke me up for a scene. I was still a bit sleepy and confused, and I remember looking at him. He actually stopped the camera mid-take, which surprised everyone. Quentin Tarantino was furious and immediately asked Brad what he’d done. He warned Brad that stopping the camera was absolutely forbidden and would ruin his career, emphasizing that directing was Tarantino’s responsibility. After that, Brad simply pointed out that the line hadn’t been written in the script.

Dern also shared that he added a line during filming that ended up in the final movie: “I don’t know who you are, but you touched me today. You came to visit me, now I gotta go back to sleep.” Tarantino liked the line, and Dern was inspired to say it after Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio reassured him they wanted him in the film, telling him, “You’re going to be in my movie no matter what.” He said their support really moved him.

Laura Dern’s role in Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood continued a successful collaboration, as it was her third film with the director after Django Unchained (2012) and The Hateful Eight (2015). She was cast in the 2019 movie following the death of Burt Reynolds, who Tarantino had originally chosen for the role of Spahn. A key scene involving Dern and Brad Pitt’s characters shows Pitt as Cliff Booth visiting Spahn’s ranch to ensure the residents (who were actually members of the Manson Family) weren’t causing trouble.

In addition to the previously mentioned actors, Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood features a large cast including Margot Robbie, Emile Hirsch, Margaret Qualley, Timothy Olyphant, Julia Butters, Austin Butler, Dakota Fanning, Mike Moh, and the late Luke Perry. Brad Pitt received a Golden Globe and Academy Award for his portrayal of Cliff Booth. The film itself also won Golden Globes for Best Musical or Comedy and Best Screenplay, as well as an Oscar for Best Production Design, and was nominated for several other awards.

Brad Pitt is bringing back his character from Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood in a new Netflix film called The Adventures of Cliff Booth. The movie, directed by David Fincher, will be released in theaters on November 25th before becoming available on Netflix on December 25th. Pitt was previously set to star in Quentin Tarantino’s planned tenth and final film, The Movie Critic, but that project has been cancelled.
