Quantic Dream, the studio behind story-focused single-player games like Heavy Rain, Beyond: Two Souls, and Detroit: Become Human, surprised fans today by announcing their first competitive multiplayer game. Called Spellcasters: Chronicles, it’s a 3v3 team-based action game set in a vibrant fantasy world. In a blog post, studio founder David Cage also reassured players that their upcoming Star Wars game is still being worked on.
Quantic Dream, the studio known for narrative single-player games, is making a MOBA?
Honestly, as a fan, I’ve been pretty surprised and worried about Quantic Dream’s new game. It’s a multiplayer game, and that’s a tough area for anyone to succeed in. We’ve seen so many multiplayer games fail recently that it’s hard to get excited. Even the creator, David Cage, admits they don’t have much experience with this kind of game – he said they have a lot to prove! And if you look at the comments on the trailer, most people don’t seem thrilled with the idea either.
The most popular comment on the trailer says, “No one asked for a flashy version of Paragon…” Paragon was a free-to-play online battle arena game that was discontinued in 2018. Many people are comparing it to Concord, the poorly received competitive hero shooter released by PlayStation last year. One comment perfectly captures the general feeling: “This isn’t what I wanted from Quantic Dream.” Fans are puzzled by Quantic Dream’s decision to change direction, especially since they haven’t released a game in seven years and are known for successful single-player experiences. Is this another example of a developer trying to create a constantly updated, online game simply to make more money?
Okay, so I was checking out the latest from Quantic Dream, and apparently, they *are* still working on Star Wars: Eclipse! That’s good news, because for a while it felt like it was totally shelved. They said on their blog they’ll share more when they can, which is…something. But honestly, it’s still a big mystery. We haven’t gotten much past that awesome trailer from 2021, and it feels like they’re not really showing us anything new, just confirming the game hasn’t been cancelled. I’m still hyped, but I’m also starting to get a little impatient!
We need to be patient with Quantic Dream, as there’s still a chance *Spellcasters: Chronicles* could become very popular. We might also see a big reveal for *Star Wars: Eclipse* at the Game Awards in December. Right now, we don’t know much about either game, making predictions difficult. However, creating a successful competitive multiplayer game is always a significant challenge, even for experienced developers.
