Details about the PlayStation 6 are still secret, and we’re currently only hearing speculation. Sony has officially stated, through Mark Cerny, that the new console will heavily feature machine learning and ray tracing. Everything else we know comes from unconfirmed leaks. According to a former PlayStation executive, impressive graphics aren’t enough – the console needs other strengths as well.
Graphics alone won’t sell the console anymore
During an early October podcast on the Skill Up channel, Shuhei Yoshida discussed Sony’s plans for its next console, the PlayStation 6. While Sony hasn’t officially announced the PS6, Yoshida, a former head of the PlayStation brand, explained that Hideaki Nishino, PlayStation’s general manager, will need a strong vision for how it will improve upon the PS5. Simply having better graphics isn’t enough, as the visual differences are becoming increasingly difficult to see.
Graphics are getting so good that it’s becoming hard to tell the difference between ray tracing and standard graphics, or even notice differences in framerate, unless you’re comparing them directly. I don’t think PlayStation can continue to focus solely on improving graphics power to deliver a high-end experience; it seems like that approach only appeals to a small group of players.
Sony consistently prioritizes unique features, and the DualSense controller is a prime example. It’s not just an accessory; it actually impacts how games are designed and played. According to the director of Astro Bot, the DualSense, along with the PS5’s fast SSD, is one of the console’s most defining characteristics.
I’m really excited for the PS6, and it sounds like Sony isn’t just focusing on making it super powerful. They seem to want to show off something special beyond just specs. It’s cool to see Microsoft doing the same thing with their new Xbox, which they’re describing as a really high-end device. Apparently, the new Xbox is going to be pretty expensive – over $1,000! – but the PS6 is rumored to be around $600, which seems a lot more reasonable.
