The movie ‘Project Hail Mary’ is a huge hit, and a dedicated fan is now selling handmade copies of the fox sweater worn by Ryan Gosling in the film for $500.
The new science-fiction film is a huge success, earning over $420.7 million in just three weeks and receiving excellent reviews. TopMob praised it as a captivating story about the best of human skill and creativity.
Everyone’s been discussing the movie’s plot, special effects, and the charming alien, Rocky. But a surprising number of fans are also obsessed with the knitted cardigan Ryan Gosling’s character, Dr. Ryland Grace, wears. The original pattern was for a wolf, but the movie version was changed to a fox.
Someone has taken the popular knitting pattern inspired by the fox sweater in the book Project Hail Mary and made their own version. They even managed to sell it for $500!
Project Hail Mary fan says the fox sweater is a “labor of love”

Leann Anderson, an Etsy maker, created the fox sweater Ryan Gosling wore in the movie Project Hail Mary. She started with a pattern from Mary Maxim, originally designed for a wolf, and modified it. Anderson shared on Threads that making the sweater has been a particularly enjoyable project for her.
After ten years as a graphic designer, she’s now a stay-at-home mom who recently learned to knit. She’s particularly proud of her latest project: a Fox cardigan inspired by the book and movie. She used the Mary Maxim’s Wolf pattern as a base and customized the charts to resemble the version worn by the character Grace.
She described the sweater as a passion project, representing everything she’d learned about knitting over the past year. The Etsy listing noted it took her 30 to 40 hours to create, and she priced it at $525, which she felt was fair considering the time and effort involved. She also shared the pattern she adapted on Ravelry, a website where knitters and crocheters can find free patterns.
Ryan Gosling specifically requested the fox design for his Project Hail Mary sweater

Costume designer Glyn Dillon shared on Instagram that he found the initial wolf-patterned sweater at a vintage market. However, Ryan Gosling asked for it to be altered to feature a fox instead, after noticing foxes while walking around London.
Dillon mentioned he was in London and had seen many of the city’s foxes. While some Londoners see them as a nuisance, Dillon, like Ryan, thinks they’re wonderful and enjoys the special feeling of seeing one at night.
He asked if we could swap out the wolves for foxes, which seemed like a cool idea. We were seriously crunched for time, but it also meant we could update some other visuals, like those really obvious blood-red footprints, which was a plus.
Mary Maxim is now offering the updated pattern, featuring the fox design, along with the yarn needed to make the sweater for about $80. It’s been very popular and has already sold out, as fans eagerly want to create their own version.
