You don’t have much time left to watch the popular show on Netflix. It’s being taken off the platform before a new version is released.
If you’re a fan of Prison Break, you still have until January 30, 2026, to binge-watch all five seasons on Netflix. The show, often considered the best prison drama ever made, first aired on Fox in 2005 and ran until 2009 with four seasons. It was later brought back for a fifth season in 2017.
The TV series Prison Break, created by Paul Scheuring, centers around two brothers: Michael Scofield and Lincoln Burrows (Dominic Purcell). When Lincoln is wrongly convicted of a crime and sentenced to death, Michael devises a complex plan to help him escape from prison and prove his innocence.
The show’s first two seasons were very successful, centering around Michael’s scheme to get himself imprisoned at the same facility as his brother. But breaking out proved more complicated than he expected; he constantly had to negotiate and assist other inmates in their escapes along the way.
Okay, so after Season 3, things really started to feel off for me. They brought Michael back into prison, this time in Panama, but it just didn’t hit the same way. It felt like they were trying to recapture the magic of the very first season, but without all the things that made it great, and on a much smaller scale. It just didn’t quite work, you know?
Many consider Prison Break to be one of the best prison dramas ever made, but its reviews on Rotten Tomatoes don’t quite match that reputation. The first season received the highest critic score at 79% (and was designated ‘Certified Fresh’), while seasons three and four both scored 50%. Viewers, however, generally liked the show, giving it a 77% approval rating.
Prison Break Is Getting Rebooted
Following the success of many other revived series, Prison Break is getting a new installment. Rumors of a continuation began circulating in December 2024, and Hulu officially announced the reboot in October. Elgin James, known for his work on Mayans M.C., will be the writer, showrunner, and executive producer for the new series, and he’s also directing the first episode.

This reboot doesn’t include any of the original actors, but it takes place in the same world. The series stars Emily Browning (known from American Gods) as Cassidy, Drake Rodger (Landman) as Tommy, Lukas Gage (Dead Boy Detectives) as Jackson, Clayton Cardenas (Mayans M.C.) as Michael, also known as “Ghost,” JR Bourne (Teen Wolf) as Junior, Georgie Flores (CSI: NY) as Andrea, and Myles Bullock (Criminal Minds) as Darius, nicknamed “Red.”
Prison Break is available to stream on Netflix until Jan. 30.
