Despite a crowded field of contenders, the new sci-fi series coming to Prime Video is poised to become the definitive cyberpunk show. Science fiction television is currently thriving, with popular and critically praised shows like Silo, Foundation, and Severance leading the way. Amazon’s upcoming RoboCop reboot suggests this success will continue.
Despite the success of many sci-fi shows, cyberpunk hasn’t quite found its footing on TV. Amazon Prime’s decision to cancel a well-received cyberpunk thriller after just eight episodes proves it can be a difficult genre to get right for streaming. However, the upcoming series Blade Runner 2099 has the potential to finally change that.
Blade Runner 2099 Can Be The Perfect Cyberpunk Series
Ridley Scott’s 1982 film Blade Runner is a hugely influential movie that helped define the cyberpunk genre, alongside the Philip K. Dick novel it’s based on, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? Although the 2017 sequel, Blade Runner 2049 directed by Dennis Villeneuve, received positive reviews, both films didn’t perform well financially in theaters.
Luckily, the new Prime Video series Blade Runner 2099 isn’t a single movie, which is a smart move for adapting a complex story like this. The show’s focus on artificial intelligence feels very relevant right now, but cyberpunk stories can be difficult for people unfamiliar with the genre to get into.
Cyberpunk stories are known for their detailed and quickly unfolding worlds. That’s likely why William Gibson’s groundbreaking novel, Neuromancer, isn’t being adapted into an Apple TV series until 42 years after it was first published in 1984. The Blade Runner films faced a similar challenge, having to fit a lot of background and story into their relatively short running times.
Blade Runner 2099 Fixes The Sci-Fi Franchise’s Biggest Struggle
Unlike previous installments, Blade Runner 2099 has more time to fully develop its vision of the future. The series centers on Olwen, played by Michelle Yeoh, a replicant nearing the end of her lifespan, and the storyline suggests it will continue the franchise’s tradition of complex ethical questions about artificial intelligence and androids.
While the recent movie The Running Man didn’t quite hit the mark, this new series is smart to start on TV. This allows Blade Runner 2099 to carefully build its futuristic, cyberpunk world. If it succeeds, it could become the best cyberpunk series ever made, and it’s expected to arrive on Prime Video later this year.
