There’s been a lot of talk lately about how expensive video games are becoming. Game companies are steadily increasing prices, and players are making their unhappiness known. We’ve even seen this pushback have an impact, like with the recent development surrounding The Outer Worlds 2.
Despite these benefits, not all developers agree with this shift. Tim Cain, who helped create Fallout, has strongly emphasized the cost savings the gaming industry has seen through becoming digital.
In a recent podcast, a game developer discussed how moving away from physical game copies has impacted the industry. He explained that digital releases simplified distribution and allowed developers more time to refine their games. He also noted that eliminating the need to manufacture physical copies saved companies money, but unfortunately, these savings weren’t passed on to players.
This benefits everyone financially, as it should be less expensive. While prices were expected to decrease, they haven’t actually gone down.
Cain mentioned that game development costs are rising, but he believes the profits from selling games digitally have been even greater. Essentially, he suggests that large companies have benefited financially, potentially at the players’ expense. However, it’s important to remember this is just one person’s perspective, and it’s difficult to confirm if it’s truly what happened.
