Somewhere out there, a PlayStation fan is about to become a video game character.
For three decades, Sony has created iconic gaming universes like those in Ghost of Tsushima and Gran Turismo. These worlds were always filled with made-up characters or celebrities. But for the first time, they’re letting ordinary people – like your neighbors – become part of the game.
PlayStation launches The Playerbase, a program to put real fans inside PlayStation Studios games
On April 7th, Sony Interactive Entertainment introduced The Playerbase, a unique community initiative. The concept is straightforward: they take a scan of a fan’s face and incorporate it into a game as a character.
PlayStation is looking for fans to become digital doubles! You can apply at playstation.com/the-playerbase by sharing your PlayStation story and connecting your PSN account. Sony will select finalists for video interviews, and then bring the winner to Los Angeles to create a detailed digital scan of themselves. The program begins with the game Gran Turismo 7.

Every game will be unique, reflecting its own setting. For example, in Gran Turismo 7, the winner gets their face added to the game as a character, then collaborates with a designer to create a special logo and paint scheme for a car. These designs are then permanently displayed in a special section of the game.
As a PlayStation fan, I’m excited to hear the game will be available in a bunch of countries – across North and South America, Europe, Asia, South Africa, and Australia! Sony also hinted that more games from their PlayStation Studios will be coming to the platform, which is awesome, but they didn’t give us any more details than that just yet.
Sony is focusing on creating a more immersive experience for players, making them feel truly part of the game world. They recently patented a system, expected to launch around January 2026, that uses AI to create personalized podcasts. These podcasts would be narrated by PlayStation characters and based on each player’s gameplay, what their friends are doing, and the types of games they enjoy.
