Off Campus Season 2 Spoilers: What Happens With Allie & Dean (Based On The Books)

Warning! This article includes MAJOR spoilers for Off Campus season 1 and Elle Kennedy’s The Score.

A major difference between the first season of ‘Off Campus’ and Elle Kennedy’s original books is that the show quickly establishes a romantic connection between Allie Hayes and Dean Di Laurentis. The series, which stars Ella Bright as Hannah Wells and Belmont Cameli as Garrett Graham, is based on Kennedy’s ‘The Deal,’ the first in her new adult sports romance series. However, Allie and Dean’s relationship doesn’t happen until the third book, ‘The Score.’

The novel series features a fast-moving romance between Allie and Dean, building on the story of John Logan (Antonio Cipriano) and Grace Ivers. While Grace isn’t in the first season of the show, the actress who will play her, India Fowler, has been cast for the already-planned second season, Off Campus. There’s a very brief mention of her character in episode 6, “The Breakaway,” which also happens to be where Allie and Dean’s secret relationship begins. Whether this is a coincidence or intentional remains to be seen.

Following an episode of Heated Rivalry focusing on Scott and Kip, the first season of Off Campus shifts its focus from Garrett and Hannah. After a dramatic Thanksgiving dinner, the show dedicates about 30 minutes to showing how Allie and Dean ended up spending the holiday together in New York. Fans of the book The Score might be surprised by how quickly the adaptation covers Allie and Dean’s story – their journey to Thanksgiving makes up around 65% of the book’s plot.

The TV adaptation of Allie-Cat and Maverick’s love story differs from the book in several ways – some changes are small, others are significant, and a few introduce completely new plotlines and even new rivals for the second season. Although Prime Video hasn’t officially confirmed it, the show’s creator, Louisa Levy, strongly hinted to ScreenRant’s Ash Crossan that Allie and Dean’s relationship will be the central focus of season two – it makes sense, considering how the first season ended! Fans can expect plenty of romantic, steamy, and emotional moments in the upcoming episodes.

How Off Campus Season 1 Changes Allie & Dean’s Love Story

In the books, Dean and Allie connect through their friends, Hannah and Garrett. The TV show introduces them differently – they first meet while dancing at a birthday party for Dean and Beau Maxwell. There’s immediate chemistry, but Allie is already in a complicated, on-again-off-again relationship with Sean. Interestingly, Sean’s personality in the first season of Off Campus is more similar to how he’s portrayed in The Score than the kinder, more likable version of him we see in The Deal.

BOOKS IN ORDER COUPLE
The Deal Garrett Graham and Hannah Wells
The Mistake John Logan and Grace Ivers
The Score Dean Heyward-Di Laurentis and Allie Hayes
The Goal John Tucker and Sabrina James
The Legacy All couples: “Where are they now?”

After ending things with Sean, Allie finds herself at the guys’ house, having spent the night at Malone’s. This leads to a scene mirroring Allie and Dean’s initial connection in The Score – she walks in on Dean trying to have a threesome, and they end up discussing her breakup and how Dean might help her get over it by the fire pit. While in the original book, this night also marked the beginning of a physical relationship between Allie and Dean, this version of the story in Off Campus delays that moment.

Things quickly heat up between Allie and Dean, leading to a playful and sensual montage of intimate moments – including a scene reminiscent of a famous bathtub scene from Friends. This builds to a more personal, though somewhat fast-paced, depiction of their Thanksgiving weekend together. Notably, the show skips over Dean meeting Allie’s father and a group night out with Dean, Allie, Beau, and Joanna, leaving those moments potentially for flashbacks in a future season.

Things take a turn for Allie and Dean in The Score. Unlike their initial encounter, they both decide to be exclusive after realizing their feelings for each other during a difficult conversation with Sean. However, the show portrays their dynamic differently. Allie is hesitant about her growing feelings for Dean, while Dean is eager to embrace them. Instead of exploring a relationship, Allie suggests they both see other people. Dean respects her wishes, but Allie ends up sleeping with Hunter Davenport – someone Dean particularly dislikes – which complicates things further.

This creates significant problems for Dean and Allie’s relationship. Unlike the books, where Dean actually supports Hunter Davenport and even coaches him, the show has portrayed Hunter as a much more prominent figure. Allie’s actions will likely disrupt the hockey team’s chemistry, potentially damaging their chances of success, and could also alter the course of Dean and Allie’s romance.

What Does The Future Hold For Allie & Dean In Off Campus Season 2?

Even though the first season of Off Campus already covered a lot of Allie and Dean’s relationship, Dean’s ongoing conflict with Hunter Davenport creates some much-needed space for them to reassess things. Allie needs to demonstrate that she’s capable of being independent, and Dean has to confront his history with Davenport—which seems connected to his sister, Summer—and prevent it from impacting their hockey teamwork.

The ongoing conflict could also affect the storylines for Garrett, Logan, and Tucker (Jalen Thomas Brook) in the upcoming season. Garrett will continue to face repercussions from his suspension, and Logan will be doing everything he can to get the attention of NHL scouts.

I’ve learned there’s so much more to Dean and Allie’s story than we saw in their first season! In the book, Dean actually becomes an assistant coach for a junior hockey team – which is cool because it connects back to that fundraiser he helped with in season one. And things get complicated for him with a new coach who arrives; apparently, Dean has a past with his daughter, and it wasn’t a happy one. It sounds like there’s going to be some drama!

Allie gets a chance to audition for a big TV comedy in Los Angeles, but she’s struggling with the idea of leaving her father, who recently received an MS diagnosis, back in New York. The show has already hinted that Allie has an agent and could see her career begin to flourish this season. Exploring these storylines would allow the characters to develop individually before potentially reuniting.

The TV adaptation of Dean’s story hasn’t fully explored a key part of his past – his best friend, Beau. (If you want to avoid major spoilers from the books, you might want to skip ahead.) Because the show’s first season focused heavily on Allie and Dean, Beau is already a more prominent character than in the original story. Since the show has already covered so much of Allie and Dean’s history, the adaptation will likely have more time to delve into Dean’s future grief over Beau and how it impacts his relationships with both Allie and his hockey teammates.

It might take book fans a little while to adjust to some of the changes in Allie and Dean’s storyline, but the showrunners clearly have a plan for how these changes will play out. In a recent interview with ScreenRant, creator Levy shared that season 2 is already written, and Dean and Allie’s relationship will continue the story successfully, following the heartfelt and thoughtful romance of Hannah and Garrett.
