This year’s White House Correspondents’ Dinner didn’t have a traditional comedian, but Jimmy Kimmel still delivered a mock monologue on his show on April 23rd. He joked about everything from the president’s complexion to a fake appearance by Dog the Bounty Hunter, and even poked fun at First Lady Melania Trump, comparing her glow to that of “an expectant widow.” The joke received a mixed reaction, but just two days later, a shooting at the real White House Correspondents’ Dinner overshadowed everything.
Honestly, the fallout from the White House Correspondents’ Dinner really bothered me. The next day, Fox News jumped on a joke Jimmy Kimmel made – about a fictional ‘widow’ – and pointed out it aired not long before the actual shooting. Seriously, they tried to make an issue of it being 48 hours later! It felt like a really bad-faith argument. I can’t help but think the President and First Lady probably didn’t even hear the joke, they were busy being amazed by the mentalist performing at the dinner! It just felt like a reach to create controversy.
Melania Trump publicly criticized Jimmy Kimmel on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday, April 27th, calling him a coward and accusing him of using ABC as protection. She wrote that Kimmel shouldn’t be allowed on television, comparing him to a villainous version of Santa Claus. She demanded that ABC take action against what she called his terrible behavior, suggesting it was harmful to her ‘community’ – a reference likely meaning those associated with the White House.
This isn’t the first time Donald Trump and his family have publicly clashed with Jimmy Kimmel. Back in September 2025, ABC temporarily stopped airing Jimmy Kimmel Live! for nearly a week following criticism of Kimmel’s comments about Charlie Kirk. Trump then called for Kimmel to be fired when Stephen Colbert announced he was leaving Late Night, but ABC hasn’t taken any action to cancel Kimmel’s show. Kimmel has said he plans to leave when Trump is no longer in office, so it seems the situation is currently at a standstill.
