The newest software update for the Switch and Switch 2 has made some helpful improvements, but it also seems to have stopped many docks made by other companies from working. Nintendo says this wasn’t supposed to happen.
Nintendo confirmed that when you connect the new Nintendo Switch 2 to its dock, it will display video and play sound, just like the original Nintendo Switch works with its own dock.
The company also stated it has no plans to block or disrupt compatibility with legally made third-party docks. However, it’s not clear what Nintendo means by a “legal” dock.
After the November 11th update to version 21.0.0, some Nintendo Switch 2 owners reported problems using docks made by companies other than Nintendo. However, other users said their docks continued to work as expected. Dock manufacturers like Hagibis and Jemdo have since released updates to fix compatibility issues with the new Switch software.
Even if Nintendo didn’t mean for this to happen, a significant number of users have reported problems with third-party docks after the recent Switch update, clearly showing the update caused compatibility issues. Nintendo doesn’t seem interested in fixing this themselves, so it’s likely dock manufacturers will have to release their own updates to resolve the problems.
Many Nintendo Switch owners use docks made by companies other than Nintendo – perhaps they want one in multiple rooms, or a portable option. However, Nintendo has made the USB-C port on the upcoming Switch 2 more difficult for these third-party dock manufacturers to work with.
You can find many Switch 2 docks made by companies other than Nintendo online for between $20 and $50. However, Nintendo’s official dock kit – which includes the dock itself, a high-speed HDMI cable, a USB-C cable, and a power adapter – costs $125.
