It’s been almost ten years since the release of Nier: Automata, but Square Enix has announced the series isn’t over, hinting at a possible new game in the works.
During the livestream celebrating the game’s 9th anniversary, Square Enix finally confirmed something fans had been wanting for years. The announcement came as part of the celebration of the game’s history.
The developer hinted at a possible sequel to Nier: Automata at the end of their broadcast, saying the story would “be continued.”
Nier: Automata set “to be continued” soon
Released in 2017, Nier: Automata has become one of Square Enix’s most popular recent games, praised by fans for its compelling story, engaging gameplay, and memorable characters.
The game’s 9th anniversary livestream was a celebration of its incredible success! Square Enix announced that the game has now sold over 10 million copies around the world, solidifying its place as both a fan favorite and a commercial hit.
Square Enix has confirmed they’re working on another project related to NieR: Automata, but they haven’t said what form it will take. It could be a direct sequel, a side story, a brand new game within the same world, or simply a continuation of their existing Automata plans. The announcement suggests many exciting options are still on the table.
Evidence is mounting that a new game project is underway. Several core developers from Nier: Automata announced they were collaborating on a new title in the summer of 2025. They indicated that we might not see the game revealed until 2027, implying it’s still early in development.
This timing fits well with the 10th anniversary of Nier: Automata, making it a perfect opportunity for Square Enix to announce or launch a new game in the series.
Square Enix hasn’t shared any details yet about the next installment of NieR: Automata, such as its name, release date, or how it will be released, but they’ve confirmed the story isn’t finished.
