Eiji Aonuma, the producer of the Zelda series, has suggested the next major Legend of Zelda game might borrow ideas from Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment, the spin-off game created in collaboration with Koei Tecmo.
While Tears of the Kingdom explores a future Hyrule, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment goes back in time, focusing on the war that resulted in Ganondorf’s imprisonment.
Similar to past Hyrule Warriors games, Age of Imprisonment combines the world and stories of Zelda with exciting, large-battle combat. Players will fight against huge groups of enemies using well-known characters.
Although the game leans more towards action, Aonuma confirmed it has significantly influenced the creative direction of the Zelda team.
Zelda team inspired by Age of Imprisonment
Eiji Aonuma recently told 4Gamer that the team behind the Legend of Zelda series drew inspiration from Age of Imprisonment, despite not being able to launch a Zelda game as the first title on the new Switch 2 console.
“Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment is the initial Zelda game for the Nintendo Switch 2. We actually hoped we’d be the first to release a Zelda title on the system,” he added with a laugh.

Working with Koei Tecmo on Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment has given us some great ideas, and you might see those ideas show up in the next main Zelda game. We hope playing Hyrule Warriors gets you excited about what we have planned for the future of the Zelda series!
Although Aonuma didn’t reveal any details about gameplay or story, his statements hint that concepts from Age of Imprisonment might inspire the next major Zelda game.
Nintendo hasn’t said when the next major Zelda game will be available, but according to Aonuma, the development team is already planning for the future.
