A new director has signed on for the upcoming reboot of the Paranormal Activity horror series. The franchise began with a unique idea from Oren Peli, who not only created the story and wrote the script for the first film in 2009, but also directed it. The success of the original led to Paranormal Activity 2 being released just a year later in 2010.
The Paranormal Activity series originally had six movies released one after another, but then took a long break. The last film, Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin, came out in 2021. Now, a new Paranormal Activity reboot is in development.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Ian Tuason is set to direct the next Paranormal Activity movie. He’s currently finalizing a deal for the position, while original creator Oren Peli will remain a producer on the film.
The latest installment, Paranormal Activity 8, is getting a boost from horror veteran James Wan, who’s joining as a producer. Known for successful franchises like The Conjuring and Insidious, this marks Wan’s first involvement with the Paranormal Activity series.
The news about Tuason joining the project comes less than two weeks after it was revealed that Paramount Pictures and Blumhouse-Atomic Monster will be working together on the upcoming reboot.
The quick development of the eighth Paranormal Activity movie is noteworthy. Plans for a new installment, originally called Paranormal Activity: The Other Side, were first revealed in 2022, with an expected release in 2023.
The planned project fell through, which meant fans had to wait longer for a new Paranormal Activity movie. Although the series could struggle again in the future, the recent stream of updates suggests things are back on track and a new film is likely to happen.
Choosing Tuason offers a significant opportunity for a new horror director. He just released his first film, Undertone, this year, and it was a hit with audiences at the Fantasia International Film Festival, winning the award for best Canadian film.
After a competitive bidding process, A24 acquired Undertone. This success demonstrates that Tuason is quickly becoming a rising star in the horror genre, particularly within the paranormal subgenre. Their collaboration with Paramount on Paranormal Activity 8 has the potential to solidify Tuason’s position as a promising horror director.
