The new mobile game, Dragon Quest Smash/Grow, is available now for free, but players can already purchase in-game items – a single pack of gems currently costs $329.99.
The new role-playing game, created by Square Enix and KLab Games, launched on April 21st for both iOS and Android devices. It’s the first game in the Dragon Quest series to feature roguelite elements – meaning levels are randomly generated and players start fresh with each run. Players battle monsters in dungeons, gain temporary power-ups called Blessings during each stage, and obtain new weapons and gear through a collectible system called the Transmuter.
To encourage players to visit its online store right away, the game’s official account gave away free in-game items that could only be claimed there. But if players looked beyond that initial offer, they discovered something unexpected.
Dragon Quest Smash/Grow’s web store is selling a $329.99 gem pack on launch day
The most expensive bundle, Gem Pack I, costs $329.99 and is only available on the game’s official website – you can’t buy it through the App Store or Google Play. This pack includes 50,000 gems you purchase, an extra 9,500 free gems, and 100 Web Coins, and players can buy it as many times as they like.

Gems are the in-game currency you can use to get new weapons and equipment from special banners. These items help improve your character’s abilities and progress. You can earn Gems by logging in daily, completing story missions, and leveling up your Adventure Rank. However, many players find that spending Gems speeds up the process of getting powerful gear.
Players were surprised by the price of the game when it launched. One user on the ResetEra forum shared that they discovered the cost while checking the store for a free item, and mentioned they’d never seen a mobile game purchase option exceed $500 AUD before.
The most expensive in-game purchase in Genshin Impact costs around $100. However, the equivalent purchase in Dragon Quest Smash/Grow costs over three times as much.
