In late October, Rockstar Games let go of over 30 workers in the UK and Canada, initially stating the reason was serious misconduct. However, a recent report by People Make Games reveals these firings weren’t related to leaks about Grand Theft Auto 6 or any other Rockstar games.
People Make Games reports that the problem started when internal messages from Rockstar were shared on a Discord server used by employees and union representatives. These messages concerned a new Slack policy that removed channels for non-work-related conversations.
According to the report, Rockstar Games has extremely strict security measures – employees can only access their email while at the office. It seems an employee shared updates from Slack on a Discord server before most of the development team had been officially informed.
According to People Make Games, a message on Discord was shown to Rockstar’s management, which then started an internal investigation. This investigation ultimately led to the dismissal of the employees involved.
After the layoffs, the IWGB union accused Rockstar Games of trying to prevent workers from organizing and filed a lawsuit on behalf of those who lost their jobs. More than 200 current Rockstar employees signed a letter asking the company to rehire the fired workers. Currently, the situation seems unresolved, and the dispute may be settled in a UK court.
