HBO’s Harry Potter Series Isn’t Doing Anything New

However, The Magician’s Nephew has never been made into a movie or TV show before.

Originally published in 1955, The Magician’s Nephew is the sixth book in C.S. Lewis’s Chronicles of Narnia series and a story that takes place before The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. Netflix is using it as the beginning of their new Narnia films, showing how Digory Kirke (David McKenna) and Polly Plummer (Beatrice Campbell) first discovered the magical Wood Between the Worlds. The film will also depict the rise of the evil White Witch, Jadis (Emma Mackey), and how Narnia was created by the great lion, Aslan.

Though familiar characters like Digory Kirke, Aslan, and Jadis will appear in Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew, they’ll be portrayed at earlier stages in their lives and with different personalities than we’ve seen before. For example, we’ll meet Kirke as a child, long before he becomes the mysterious professor from The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. Telling a completely new story like this should help draw in viewers who aren’t already fans of Narnia.

Although Harry Potter and The Chronicles of Narnia have very different plots, they both explore the world of fantasy and feature characters who discover incredible new opportunities after traveling to magical places.
