Netflix’s Narnia Movie Has 1 Advantage Over HBO’s Harry Potter

Both The Chronicles of Narnia and Harry Potter are getting new adaptations for today’s viewers. However, Netflix’s Narnia reboot is ahead of HBO’s Harry Potter series in one key way. This news comes after the $8 billion Harry Potter film franchise concluded, quickly followed by plans for a Narnia reboot – setting the stage for a competition between these two major fantasy worlds.

The new Narnia movies are planned to hit theaters in February 2027, followed by a release on Netflix in April. While three of C.S. Lewis’s books have been made into films before by other studios, this version, directed by Greta Gerwig, will offer a fresh take on the story. This distinguishes it from the upcoming HBO Harry Potter series, which appears to closely follow the original Warner Bros. films.

HBO’s Harry Potter Series Isn’t Doing Anything New

Unfortunately, early looks at the series – including set photos and official images – show it won’t be doing anything particularly new or original. The look and feel of locations like Hogwarts and Diagon Alley are almost identical to the movies, and the characters and storyline will follow the same path. This has already caused some disagreement, as the HBO series appears to be very closely mirroring the film franchise.

For many people who grew up with them, the Harry Potter films are a source of comfort and a yearly tradition, especially around the holidays. However, the new HBO series feels like a simple retell of the same story with the same look and feel, which is a bit disappointing. While it would have been interesting to see a modernized take or a completely new direction for the story, the series sticks closely to the original.

The upcoming HBO reboot will include details that were left out of the films. The longer television format allows for expanded storylines, like more of Professor Dumbledore’s backstory (played by Lambert Wilson) and a deeper look at Harry Potter’s (Dominic Monaghan) life before attending Hogwarts. We’ll also see a more detailed exploration of Hogwarts culture. Despite these additions, the series will still capture the same spirit and core themes as the movies, which is what makes this adaptation of Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew so promising.

Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew Will Be a Story We’ve Never Seen Before

While HBO is adapting the Harry Potter series, Netflix is taking on The Chronicles of Narnia with a fresh approach, starting with stories audiences haven’t yet seen in live-action. The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe has been adapted several times – in 1967, 1979, and as a 2005 film by Walden Media, which also led to adaptations of Prince Caspian and The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. However, The Magician’s Nephew has never been made into a movie or TV show before.

Originally published in 1955, The Magician’s Nephew is the sixth book in C.S. Lewis’s Chronicles of Narnia series and a story that takes place before The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. Netflix is using it as the beginning of their new Narnia films, showing how Digory Kirke (David McKenna) and Polly Plummer (Beatrice Campbell) first discovered the magical Wood Between the Worlds. The film will also depict the rise of the evil White Witch, Jadis (Emma Mackey), and how Narnia was created by the great lion, Aslan.

Though familiar characters like Digory Kirke, Aslan, and Jadis will appear in Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew, they’ll be portrayed at earlier stages in their lives and with different personalities than we’ve seen before. For example, we’ll meet Kirke as a child, long before he becomes the mysterious professor from The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. Telling a completely new story like this should help draw in viewers who aren’t already fans of Narnia.

Netflix’s Narnia Reboot Will Be More Successful Than HBO’s Harry Potter

Although Harry Potter and The Chronicles of Narnia have very different plots, they both explore the world of fantasy and feature characters who discover incredible new opportunities after traveling to magical places. Because of this, the upcoming remakes of both series will likely compete for viewers. HBO’s Harry Potter series aims for high-quality television, but Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew is predicted to be the more popular of the two.

Recent controversies surrounding the writer have turned some viewers against her work. This has led some fans to pledge to boycott HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter series, and concerns that the show will simply retell familiar movie plots may have hurt its chances of success before it even premieres. In contrast, Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew offers a new story, making it a welcome and thrilling addition to the fantasy genre.
