As a huge sci-fi fan, I remember being really excited when Netflix dropped this new series seven years ago – it was a total surprise to see the cast of Battlestar Galactica back together! Seriously, the Battlestar Galactica reboot is considered one of the best sci-fi shows of the 2000s, and for good reason. It all started with a prequel miniseries in 2003, inspired by the original 1978 show from Glen A. Larson. Then came the full series in 2004, and that’s when Katee Sackhoff really blew up as Captain Starbuck. She instantly became a sci-fi icon, and honestly, she deserves all the recognition she gets.
Since the end of Battlestar Galactica in 2009, Katee Sackhoff has had many successful roles, including appearances in the shows Longmire and Star Wars. However, she officially revisited her strong leadership roles in science fiction with the Netflix series Another Life. Created by Aaron Martin, the show features Sackhoff as Commanding Officer Niko Breckenridge, leading a crew on a risky journey through space to connect with an alien civilization after a mysterious object lands on Earth.
Season one of Another Life featured recognizable actors like Katee Sackhoff, Selma Blair, Justin Chatwin from Shameless, and Tyler Hoechlin of Teen Wolf. For its second season, the show brought on two of Sackhoff’s former co-stars from Battlestar Galactica: Rekha Sharma, who played Tory Foster in 32 episodes across seasons 2, 3, and 4, and Kate Vernon, who appeared in 25 episodes as Ellen Tigh throughout all four seasons.
In season 2 of Another Life, Sharma plays Dr. Ursula Monroe, the creator of the AI that powers the ship, Salvare. She later joins Niko’s team and becomes key to stopping the alien threat. Vernon plays Niko’s mother, Ava Breckenridge, who stays on Earth to protect Niko’s daughter, Jana (Lina Renna), as the alien invasion escalates.
Netflix’s Another Life Never Lived Up To Its Potential
The first season of this Netflix series follows two storylines: Niko’s work aboard the spaceship Salvare and her husband Erik’s investigation into a mysterious UFO crash on Earth. The show draws inspiration from classic science fiction franchises like Alien, Arrival, and Battlestar Galactica, blending elements from each into its unique narrative.
The first season of Another Life suffered because it tried to include every science fiction idea imaginable, which didn’t leave enough space to develop its characters. Just when the show started to show quiet, meaningful moments with the characters, something dramatic—like a mutiny, murder, or a strange infection—would happen. It felt like a rehash of things we’ve seen before.
The constantly changing crew made it hard to get invested in the first season’s story. Because astronauts were frequently swapped out from their cryogenic sleep, it was difficult to connect with Niko’s colleagues – it didn’t even feel worth learning their names. When characters are mostly defined by their shouting and rudeness, it’s tough to care about what happens to them.
Fortunately, Netflix decided to renew Another Life for a second season, and the show really improved. It shifted its focus to the core story of the alien invasion and its impact on Earth and the wider galaxy, moving away from standalone adventures and excessive drama. Rekha Sharma and Kate Vernon joined the cast at a good time. While it doesn’t quite reach the level of shows like Battlestar Galactica or The Mandalorian, the second season explored thought-provoking themes, including the lasting effects of colonization and the potential dangers of advanced artificial intelligence.
Despite a stronger second season, the Netflix show Another Life was ultimately canceled. Katee Sackhoff, who starred in the series, expressed her disappointment on Twitter, saying she hoped they could have continued the show for more seasons, but it just wasn’t possible.
While not a groundbreaking sci-fi series, Another Life benefited from Katee Sackhoff’s strong performance, who skillfully carried a somewhat flawed and occasionally silly show. If you’re hoping for a similar experience to Battlestar Galactica, you’ll find it’s best to watch (or re-watch) the original, which is coming back to Paramount+ and PlutoTV on May 1st.
All episodes of Another Life are streaming now on Netflix.
