Netflix’s latest crime thriller is far from a limited series.
This eight-episode crime drama, created by the team behind Power (Courtney Kemp and Tani Marole), centers on a thrilling cat-and-mouse chase in Los Angeles. It follows Isaiah Stiles, a passionate LAPD detective played by Matthew Law, as he tries to outsmart Coltrane Wilder, a cunning thief portrayed by Y’lan Noel. The show delves into themes of obsession, family, and the gray areas of morality, all while delivering intense action and suspense – making it an ideal, fast-paced watch for crime drama fans.
The finale of Nemesis ends on a dramatic note, leaving the relationship between Wilder and Stiles unresolved – and that’s intentional. Creators Kemp and Marole revealed to ScreenRant’s Grant Hermanns that they’re planning to continue the Nemesis story beyond the initial limited series, expanding the universe for future seasons.
Tani Marole explained that the show wasn’t originally planned as a long-running series – it was meant to be short and contained. However, Courtney, the creator, prefers to build expansive, interconnected worlds. Tani kept pushing for a concise, self-contained story, saying, ‘Let’s just end it here!’ while Courtney wanted to make it much bigger.
Fortunately for Kemp, Netflix also envisioned a larger story for the series. Instead of a limited run, they wanted Kemp and Marole to develop a continuing storyline for Nemesis that could span multiple seasons, and Marole eventually agreed.
Thankfully, the creative team and executives at Netflix also didn’t want the story to feel contained. That’s why it’s built around a continuing storyline.
The first season doesn’t have a clear winner or loser, and that was intentional – the show is meant to continue the story. Marole described the rivalry between Wilder and Stiles as an ongoing one, comparing it to famous, long-lasting conflicts like King Kong versus Godzilla, or the boxing matches between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather.
We have a good idea of who’s going to come out on top, but in the worlds Courtney Kemp creates – and I think this is true – there aren’t really winners and losers. It’s more about different degrees of winning and losing. This matchup is designed to be huge – think Mike Tyson versus anyone, King Kong versus Godzilla, or Pacquiao and Mayweather. It’s going to be a competitive fight right down to the very end, and when I say that, I mean it will go all the way to the final moments. We’re really excited about it and hope to continue the story if it’s successful.
Kemp didn’t reveal any details about future plans for the show, but she indicated there’s potential to significantly expand beyond the initial eight episodes.
Okay, so I’ve got some exciting news for fans. We’re not just thinking about the next season, we’re building a whole universe around this show! That’s definitely my approach – thinking about where things can go long-term. The core of the story, though, is about how obsessing over rivals and trying to ‘win’ actually hurts you in the process. And honestly, that theme has so many possibilities, so many ways it can unfold. We’re absolutely planning to explore all of that – and it’s going to be way more than just another eight episodes.
