If you played the popular arcade game NBA Jam in the ’90s, you’re likely familiar with Tim Kitzrow’s voice. He was the announcer, and his energetic commentary was a huge part of what made the game so successful. Surprisingly, Kitzrow recently shared that he didn’t receive much money for his work on the original game.
In an interview with The Escapist, Kitzrow revealed he earned $50 per hour working on NBA Jam – the same rate he received for voice work on Bally Midway’s pinball games. He later realized, after the game came out, that he should have asked for a higher fee.
Looking back, I did a few recording sessions, probably around 15 hours in total, and that was it,” Kitzrow said. “I didn’t really understand the industry well enough to think, ‘Wow, this game is hugely successful, I should be earning more than $50 an hour.’ I didn’t have anyone representing me then. When the game was released and I learned it had made a billion dollars, I realized I’d only earned about $800. That’s when it hit me that I was likely underpaid and should have asked for a higher rate.
Tim Kitzrow returned for the popular sequel, NBA Jam Tournament Edition, and became the main commentator for several Midway sports games, including NFL Blitz, NBA Showtime, and MLB Slugfest. He also lent his voice to the NBA Jam reboot by EA and was the announcer for the arcade game NBA Superstars. Currently, Kitzrow is recording commentary for Mutant Football League 2, which will be available on Steam in early access starting December 10th.
So, back in 2021, I heard they were making a documentary about NBA Jam – based on a book that came out in 2019. Sean Menard was set to direct, which sounded awesome. But honestly, four years later, and we still haven’t seen it! It’s kinda frustrating as a fan, I was really looking forward to it.
