Although the planned reboot of Buffy the Vampire Slayer fell through, fans have something new to look forward to! At Awesome Con in Washington D.C., Nathan Fillion revealed that an animated Firefly series is in the works, with the original cast returning. Even better, Joss Whedon won’t be involved. The series feels particularly relevant now, given the power of large corporations and the growing popularity of Chinese trends online.
The news was revealed during a live recording of Nathan Fillion’s podcast, Once We Were Spacemen, which also featured guests Alan Tudyk, Gina Torres, Jewel Staite, Morena Baccarin, Sean Maher, and Summer Glau – all expected to reprise their roles with voice work. Deadline reports that Adam Baldwin wasn’t present but will return as Jayne. Sadly, Ron Glass, who played Shepherd Book, passed away in 2016.
Nathan Fillion’s company is working with 20th Television Animation on a new project. Marc Guggenheim, known for his work on the Arrowverse, and Tara Butters, who worked on Agent Carter and Dollhouse, will be co-showrunners. Fillion has been hinting at this for weeks, even posting videos online of the cast and crew reuniting. It seems he really wants to have another procedural show on the air, just like he did before Firefly* was cancelled.
