Despite being known for Marvel and animated content, Disney+ also offers compelling adult dramas, and one of its best, a unique crime series, is surprisingly short. This makes it easy to binge-watch the entire gripping story in one sitting.
Disney+ has a lot of great, suspenseful shows, from murder mysteries to gritty crime dramas like Sons of Anarchy. But with so many options, it’s easy to overlook some of the really good ones.
Despite high praise from both critics (95%) and audiences (98% on Rotten Tomatoes), a compelling crime drama has flown somewhat under the radar on Disney+. This is likely due to Disney+’s large selection of content, and the fact that the show originally aired several years ago. However, it’s definitely worth watching for crime drama fans, especially since it’s a brief series – perfect for enjoying between longer shows or movies.
Mr. Inbetween Is A Painfully Underrated Crime Drama
Mr. Inbetween skillfully combines the tension of a crime drama with comedic elements, resulting in a show that’s both touching and funny. This approach is key to the story’s success, as it centers on a hitman, Ray, who’s trying to manage his dangerous job with his family life, especially his relationships with his daughter and brother. Any other way of telling the story probably wouldn’t have been as effective.
The show deliberately contrasts Ray’s violent acts with his tender moments as a father – like getting ice cream or telling his daughter about unicorns. This jarring shift highlights the duality of his life, a central theme of the series, as he constantly moves between two drastically different worlds.
This creates some touching moments for Ray, forcing him to grapple with what he does for a living and the contrast between his tough exterior and his genuine feelings for the people he cares about. It’s also genuinely funny, largely because the contrast between his criminal life and his home life is so well-portrayed.
Mr. Inbetween’s Runtime Makes It A Perfect Weekend Watch
As a critic, I’ve seen a lot of crime dramas, and while Mr. Inbetween definitely packs a punch with its various storylines, it’s not one of those sprawling epics like The Sopranos or Breaking Bad. The entire series, all three seasons of it, clocks in at around 9 hours and 58 minutes. It’s a solid length – not exactly short, but definitely not a huge time commitment either. It’s perfectly binge-able, but you won’t be needing months to finish it.
It’s definitely possible to binge-watch the entire series in a weekend. If you start Mr. Inbetween on a Friday night, you’d only need to watch about 3 hours and 20 minutes each day. Plus, the first season is just over 3 hours long, making it easy to watch all at once.
Many people don’t realize the fantastic show Mr. Inbetween is available on Disney+, which makes it a real discovery. The good news is, the whole series is fairly short, so you can easily binge-watch it all. Plus, if you enjoy it, there’s the original movie, The Magician, that the series is based on, giving you even more to watch.
