David Lowery, the director of the new art-house drama Mother Mary, starring Anne Hathaway, found a surprising source of inspiration: Taylor Swift’s Reputation tour. He told Empire that the concert film was “one of the best ever” and his team studied it extensively while filming the concert sequences in Mother Mary. They spent a remarkable amount of time analyzing it, proving just how influential it was to the film’s production.
While making the film, Lowery became a big Taylor Swift fan. To figure out how much the concert footage would cost, he meticulously analyzed three songs from the Reputation tour, breaking down each shot to estimate visual effects expenses. He explained they used Reputation as a practical guide for budgeting, as they were unsure how to capture a stadium concert on a limited budget. Hathaway even gifted him a bracelet with the lyrics to “Anti-Hero” as a wrap gift, acknowledging their shared experience at the Eras Tour.
According to director Lowery, the character of Mother Mary, played by Hathaway, was inspired by Taylor Swift. He envisioned her as what Swift might become in a decade or so, and used that idea to shape the character’s personality and presence.
