At CinemaCon 2026, Universal Pictures premiered the new Minions movie, Minions & Monsters, with the little yellow characters as the stars of the show. Illumination head Chris Meledandri shared a sneak peek at footage showing how the Minions first became famous, then lost their popularity, and are now attempting a comeback that could threaten the whole world.
Minions & Monsters get new footage
I was so excited at CinemaCon 2026 when Universal Pictures showed off some brand new footage from ‘Minions & Monsters’! Chris Meledandri, the head of Illumination, actually presented it, and Jack Black did a fantastic intro. We finally have a release date too – July 1st! I can’t wait to see the full movie.
The movie starts with the Minions giving chase to a cowboy who’s stolen something, first on horseback in the Midwest, then on a train. He tries to get away on a plane, but the Minions manage to bring it down, causing it to crash in the streets of Los Angeles. There, they meet a hopeful filmmaker, voiced by Christoph Waltz.
The next scene features the Minions reaching a Hollywood movie studio, where they’re cast as a medieval army fighting Vikings for a film. They take the mock battle incredibly seriously, grabbing weapons and truly believing they’re at war. The Minions achieve movie stardom, but their careers are cut short when sound is added to films – they just can’t handle speaking lines (according to IGN).
I’ve been following the story, and it’s crazy! The Minions got fired from their jobs at the studio and ended up lost and wandering around. Luckily, their friends, James and Henry, decided to make a movie of their own – it’s called ‘Minions & Monsters’. But things quickly went wrong; something in the movie footage hinted at the Minions accidentally putting the whole world in danger! I can’t wait to see how it all unfolds.
Pierre Coffin, known for directing all three Despicable Me movies and the first Minions film, also directs Minions & Monsters. He’s been the voice of the Minions since 2010. Brian Lynch co-wrote the screenplay with Coffin and served as an executive producer. Illumination’s Chris Meledandri and Bill Ryan produced the film.
The movie features voice performances by Christoph Waltz, Jeff Bridges (who plays the studio boss), Allison Janney, Jesse Eisenberg, Zoey Deutch, and Trey Parker. It’s a story about a group of Minions searching for a new leader, and it takes place in 1920s Los Angeles.
