2025 was an incredible year for games like Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter, and Kingdom Come Deliverance II. That makes 2026’s task of following up difficult, but it’s off to a strong start with some excellent releases already. Luckily, the year is still young, and there are many promising games yet to come.
RPG players have a lot of fantastic games to look forward to on PC and consoles this year. The upcoming titles cover a wide range of styles – from classic fantasy and martial arts adventures to fast-paced action and strategic gameplay. With major game developers working on these exciting projects, 2026 promises to be a great year for RPGs.
Phantom Blade Zero Has Been Anticipated For Years
In the dark and fantastical world of Phantom Blade Zero, you play as Soul, a character with only sixty-six days to live. Wrongfully accused of murdering his master, Soul is forced to flee and discover the real story behind the crime. His journey will pit him against former friends and test his abilities like never before.
After several delays, Phantom Blade Zero is now a highly anticipated game slated for release in 2026. The game looks amazing, with impressive motion capture technology used to create a fluid and dynamic combat system. However, players shouldn’t expect a game similar to the Soulslike genre, as the developers are aiming to establish an entirely new genre with the release of Phantom Blade Zero* in 2026.
Bloodstained: The Scarlet Engagement Is a Prequel to the Original
The first Bloodstained game was praised as a modern take on the beloved Castlevania series from the early 2000s. Now, a sequel called Scarlet Engagement is coming after a long wait. Although it has a significantly different look than the original, it still captures the same dark, gothic atmosphere that fans enjoyed.
I’m really excited about Scarlet Engagement! It’s a prequel to the original game with a completely new story and characters. What’s cool is you get to play as two different heroes at the same time, and together they’re trying to take down this Demon Lord, Elias, and destroy his castle. From what I’ve seen, it blends fast-paced action RPG battles with the exploration style of Metroidvania games, and honestly, it looks like it could be one of the best games of the year!
Gothic 1 Remake Brings a Classic to a New Audience
The original Gothic is a beloved classic, so fans are eagerly anticipating the remake. Development has been ongoing for years with few updates, causing worry that the new game might not meet expectations. Thankfully, recent gameplay footage has been very impressive, reassuring fans that the remake is shaping up well.
As a huge fan of the original Gothic, I’m so excited about Gothic 1 Remake! It’s taking me right back to the mines, and I can’t wait to start as a nobody and work my way up to becoming a real hero. From what I’ve seen, they’re really trying to stay true to the spirit of the first game, but with updated combat and quests that are even more in-depth. If they can just recapture that amazing feeling of freedom and discovery the original had, this remake has the potential to be legendary!
The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales Is a Tale Spanning Centuries
The Adventures of Elliot tells the story of Elliot, a hero who figures out how to travel through time. Determined to save the last human city, he journeys across centuries, exploring different periods in history and facing unique challenges in each one.
Okay, so this new game, Adventures of Elliot, seems like they’re taking everything people already love about those classic JRPGs, but they’ve switched things up with real-time action instead of turn-based battles. I’m really excited about that! Plus, you can use a bunch of different weapons and magic, which means I can build my character and play exactly how I want. It’s not a huge release for Square-Enix overall, but all of us JRPG fans are definitely going to be checking this one out.
Outward 2 Wants Players to Feel Immersed Instead of Empowered
The first Outward game let players truly feel like they were living in a challenging fantasy world. Everything required effort, from finding enough food to simply survive, to learning new abilities. Outward 2 aims to deliver the same experience, bringing players back to the harsh and dangerous world of Aurai.
Outward 2 aims to redefine survival RPGs by combining a compelling story with the detailed inventory and resource management players love in survival games. You’ll play as someone tasked with assisting the powerful Immaculates, embarking on an adventure across the world of Aurai. It has the potential to be a surprisingly popular game when it releases in 2026.
Beast of Reincarnation Proves Game Freak Can Make Mature RPGs
Game Freak is trying something completely different with their new game, Beast of Reincarnation, an action-RPG. Players will experience a unique story as Emma, a character living 2,000 years in the future, who must heal powerful monsters as part of a quest to defeat the Beast of Reincarnation.
Beast of Reincarnation is a visually impressive JRPG and a strong contender for one of the best-looking games of the year. The combat is also fantastic, letting players creatively combine the skills of Emma and Koo to defeat challenging enemies. It’s a great action RPG that deserves more attention.
Trails in the Sky Second Chapter Continues An Incredible Story
Falcom’s Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter was a standout JRPG released last year, and many consider it one of the best ever. It ended with a frustrating cliffhanger, leaving players anxious for the continuation of the story. Luckily, Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter is scheduled to arrive this fall.
In Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter, Estelle searches for Joshua, and along the way, she’ll reunite with friends from the first game. This installment is a crucial part of the Trails story and many fans consider it even better than the original. If you enjoy Japanese role-playing games, this is one you won’t want to miss.
Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave Brings Players Into the Heroic Games
The growing popularity of Fire Emblem is evident in its importance to Nintendo over the last ten years. As the first Fire Emblem game for the Switch 2, all attention will be on whether this new installment can regain the momentum that Fire Emblem Engage lost. Early signs are promising, with a noticeably improved visual style compared to Engage.
Fortune’s Weave is a new game where warriors compete in the Heroic Games, blessed by a powerful deity. Details are scarce, leading Fire Emblem fans to wonder if it’s connected to the popular game Three Houses. Regardless, excitement is building to see if Fortune’s Weave will become a standout title in the series.
The Blood of Dawnwalker Gives Players a Vampiric Monster Hunter
Rebel Wolves, the studio behind The Blood of Dawnwalker, is made up of developers who previously worked on The Witcher games. This influence is immediately apparent in the game’s European setting and its focus on a rugged hero trying to protect his family. However, The Blood of Dawnwalker isn’t simply a copy of The Witcher.
In the game Dawnwalker, you begin with powerful vampire abilities and have to master them while resisting the urge to feed. The game also adds a time limit: you need to rescue your family within a specific number of days, or they’ll be lost forever.
ArcheAge Chronicles Is a Different Kind of Online RPG
The first ArcheAge was a well-loved online role-playing game from the early 2010s. After several years, its developer, XL Games, began working on ArcheAge 2, which ultimately became ArcheAge Chronicles. This new version is quite different from a typical MMO, and players hoping for a traditional experience might be surprised by the significant changes made to the series.
Initially, ArcheAge Chronicles is designed to have faster, more engaging combat with an emphasis on combo attacks and dodging. The game world will also encourage smaller groups to play together, which is why the developers are calling it an “online action RPG” instead of a traditional massively multiplayer online game (MMO).
