I was almost an adult when the year 2000 arrived and the predicted computer chaos didn’t happen. It’s strange, but I don’t recall the fashion from the Y2K-themed girls’ night my friends had at Katie’s bar (not that Katie!). I remember butterfly clips, and maybe a few in She’s All That, but not the way Nia is wearing them in a ponytail. I also don’t remember anyone wearing those huge fuzzy bucket hats – Lala and Brittany both had them on, but I went to a lot of raves and never saw one! Where were the baggy JNCO jeans? Or the little sparkly baby tees? And why wasn’t anyone dressing like Britney Spears, who was super popular at the time? It makes me wonder if we were even experiencing the same Y2K era.
Jasmine is the only one who really captures the vibe of the time, with her baggy jeans and bandanna – she reminds me of Aaliyah. Unfortunately, that’s where the good impressions end for her this episode. The drama starts at a bar when Jasmine tells Michelle that if they weren’t all friends on the show, Michelle wouldn’t even see Jesse, and things would be different. Jasmine then adds that without the show, Lala wouldn’t spend time with her either. Michelle, who clearly isn’t familiar with early 2000s trends, immediately tells Lala, who is confused by the comment. It turns out Lala and Michelle had a really nice dinner together a few nights before and were starting to connect, so Lala is surprised by what Jasmine said.
During a surprisingly calm confrontation, Lala accuses Jasmine of denying something she supposedly said. Michelle attempts to clarify, but Jasmine quickly becomes defensive and accuses Michelle of talking down to her. The resulting argument feels strange and confusing – it’s unclear if Jasmine is intoxicated, has forgotten what she said, or is simply intimidated by Lala. It seems like Jasmine could have easily acknowledged their history and explained that the outing was fun but likely wouldn’t have happened without the show. Lala, being direct and honest, probably would have accepted that explanation, much like how I always aced my spelling tests in third grade.
Lala admitted she enjoyed spending time with Jasmine and felt comfortable opening up, but it also reinforced her reluctance to be vulnerable. She explained that whenever she shares herself with someone, she worries they won’t appreciate it. That really struck a chord with me. I understand why Lala has been hurt by friends before. Her close friend, James Kennedy, has also faced his own struggles. It’s clear she’s been wounded in the past. But I believe that building friendships—sharing and receiving bits of ourselves—is a beautiful part of life. Even if someone doesn’t reciprocate that openness, the connection and exchange of feelings are essential for our well-being. Letting others into your life nourishes the soul, and keeping everything guarded can ultimately be self-destructive.
Honestly, the only real drama at the first party was Nia needing to run to the party bus to feed her baby – and she rocked the cutest little post-baby faux-hawk doing it! It was kind of hilarious seeing them at that empty bar so early – they were done by 10:30 pm, with everyone stumbling home to eat chips and binge-watch Below Deck in bed. (Except Zack, Benji, and Michelle, who were living their best lives at the WeHo gay bars until two am – talk about a Y2K vibe!) The second party, Danny and Nia’s housewarming, looked just as dull. I seriously wonder why they’re always throwing these big parties. Why can’t they just hang out at each other’s places, watch The Bachelor, and get into a fight over rosé, you know, like normal people? They clearly don’t want to be out partying, so why are the producers forcing it?
The housewarming is quite a drive for anyone in Los Angeles, and the difficult commute really highlights how disconnected Nia feels from her friends and the world in general. (Though, the Target in Santa Clarita is probably great!) On the drive, Lala brings up the ongoing drama with Jasmine again, saying Jasmine tells people one thing to their face and then talks negatively about them behind their backs, and then denies it when confronted. This is what happened at the Y2K party, which is why Michelle mentioned it to Lala. Then Brandon, Brittany’s new boyfriend who lives in a relatively unknown location, chimes in to say Jasmine has always been kind and pleasant towards him.
Lala is frustrated that Brandon is immediately taking sides in a conflict he knows nothing about. He just arrived and doesn’t understand the situation or the people involved, yet he’s already offering opinions. At the party, Brandon discussed the drama with Jasmine and Lacy (who was freezing but didn’t want to mess up her outfit). Jasmine mentioned their car conversation, and Brandon essentially told her that Michelle had called someone “fake,” even though Michelle’s statement was more nuanced – she hadn’t explicitly said that, but she strongly implied it.
Jasmine started another argument, this time confronting Brittany and Michelle because Brandon told her Michelle called her fake. This is the second fight Jasmine has started in this episode based on something she believes someone said, even if it’s not true. Brittany tried to get Brandon to explain and calm things down, but Jasmine still got angry and called the whole situation “stupid.” But she’s the one causing the drama, so she’s responsible for the conflict.
Brittany is mainly bothered by Brandon’s involvement, pointing out that Jax also used to thrive on gossip and drama, and she worries Brandon is repeating that pattern. I’m still unsure about Brandon myself. Like Zack, I think things are moving too fast, and he seems very eager to be on TV. I avoid using terms like “love bombing” – they’re overused when talking about people on these shows. However, I believe Brandon’s actions are different from Jax’s. Brandon appeared to be trying to calm things down, reassuring Jasmine and her friends. He even tried to explain to Jasmine, when she was upset, that Lala had questioned her, but everyone agreed she was fine. Jax, on the other hand, created drama and fights for entertainment. Brandon seems to genuinely want everyone to get along, but he’s new to the show and doesn’t understand how to manipulate situations, so he keeps making mistakes. (Those mistakes are largely fueled by the existing drama, which Brittany jokingly compares to her old breast implants.)
Besides that, there’s the ongoing situation with Danny and Luke, who seems stuck in a difficult position. It mirrors an earlier, awkward conversation Luke had with Jason at a coffee shop, where Luke attempted to repair their friendship. He essentially listed all his grievances with Jason while simultaneously trying to include him again. Jason agreed to apologize for name-calling but refused to apologize for defending his wife. He also pointed out that Danny’s apology felt insincere because Danny hasn’t changed his behavior, which Jason considers a major problem. He has a point, but Janet has also apologized yet continues to pursue conflict with Danny, raising the question of whether she’s acting any differently.
The show has reached a standstill, and it’s clear Janet and Jason are on the outs with the cast. Most of the guys avoid Jason, and Janet is similarly isolated, with only Brittany and Lala willing to spend time with her. The cast seems to be actively excluding them from filming, and it’s working – Janet was completely absent from the latest episode, even in casual home scenes. Surprisingly, Luke is trying to get Danny to join a cigar night with the guys (excluding Zack, who’s sensitive to smoke) hoping it will give Danny and Jason a chance to talk, though it doesn’t seem promising. Danny says he needs time to consider it. As Luke walks away, Danny looks out at the backyard and focuses on a large hill – which he considers a mountain – that was a major reason he bought the house. He hoped it would inspire him, but instead, it reminds him of his own insignificance, which ironically motivates him to try harder. He suddenly considers climbing it, wondering if the effort would be worthwhile, if reaching the top would give him a fresh outlook on his life. After a moment’s thought, however, he decides against it.
