The director and cast members discussed their interpretations of Prince Adam and Teela, and the exciting revival of the Greyskull story. The director emphasized that the creative team consistently looked to the original cartoon for inspiration whenever they faced a decision. “The original cartoons always showed Skeletor with ambitious plans, but he’d ultimately fail and vow to return. We started with the question: what if he actually succeeded? That’s the foundation of our movie.”
Masters of the Universe Starts Strong
Early in the film, the royal family of Eternos is shown in danger, surrounded by the chaos caused by Skeletor’s forces. Man-at-Arms, played with his signature strength and skill, stands with them. The character designs, including Man-at-Arms’s iconic helmet, have been subtly updated to strike a balance between honoring fan expectations and avoiding excessive exaggeration – so don’t expect to see Teela in a swimsuit!
The show strikes a great balance between believable characters and fun, nostalgic moments, especially in how the characters look. Fans will be excited to see Trap Jaw’s iconic weapon arm in action as he battles both Duncan and Adam with real energy. Beast Man, Spikor, Tri-Klops, and Evil Lyn are all powerful and threatening, but they avoid overly exaggerated movements. While there’s humor, it doesn’t overshadow the action or the characters’ emotional journeys.
The film’s surprisingly gentle tone is central to its impact. Even amidst the castle siege, Duncan responds to frightened children – those who will one day inherit Eternia’s struggles – with a reassuring smile, playfully questioning their use of the word “scared.” These small, heartfelt interactions stand out against the backdrop of violence and are what initially connected Knight to the spirit of He-Man. He explains that while the movie features plenty of action and fighting, it’s ultimately about compassion, understanding, and maintaining hope. It’s about choosing to care in a world often filled with negativity. Knight also emphasizes that the film was made with genuine sincerity by people who are fans themselves.
The action sequences are reminiscent of classic sci-fi adventures, a style rarely seen in modern films. It’s like a reimagined Flash Gordon, with more realism and depth. The film features impressive, colorful sets on the planet Eternos, where King Randor battles Skeletor’s forces. Inside the castles, scenes are often chaotic, with fires and a generally rundown atmosphere. Even Earth is depicted with incredible detail, especially during a fight where Beast Man throws Adam violently around, breaking the barrier between the two worlds.
We got a glimpse of Skeletor’s entrance and how he takes control, and we heard more of the voice acting. This version’s tone is much closer to Frank Langella’s serious delivery than the more traditional Alan Oppenheimer portrayal. It’s a fresh take, but still respectful of the original.
Nicolas Galitzine Reveals He-Man & Superman Similarities
Okay, so Nicholas Galitzine talked about how crazy it was to film that transformation into He-Man! It’s funny, neither he nor Kyle Mendes were huge fans growing up with the cartoon or comics, but they definitely knew He-Man was a big deal because it’s everywhere online. Actually, they even had stills from the original series as wallpaper in their gym while they were training, which was a cool touch! He said getting the actual transformation right was important, but even more important was making it feel real, like it was coming from inside him. He really wanted to bring his own emotions and connection to the character, and you know, make it truly special.
Knight was deeply moved by Galitzine’s performance, and it clearly resonated with us while watching. Galitzine himself believes the script’s emotional core is what made it special, saying he connected with it instantly. He also discussed the hopeful and positive nature of the character with a fellow superhero actor, noting similarities between He-Man and Superman. Galitzine wonders if this emphasis on positivity reflects the current state of the world.
He recognizes the connection between He-Man and Superman, playfully telling David Corenswet he’s going to defeat him. Though the two films will be distinct, they share a common thread: filmmakers who are fans themselves, bringing a fresh take to these beloved characters and focusing on their human side. Viewers can expect that even if Skeletor wins, it might be a temporary victory.
Masters of the Universe premieres in theaters on June 5.
