Marvel Comics is saddened by the passing of Gerry Conway, a celebrated American comic book writer, who died at the age of 73.
On April 27, 2026, Marvel officially announced the news on their website, sharing a history of the writer’s career.
Born on September 10, 1952, Conway started his comics career at just 16, contributing short stories to titles like Marvel’s Chamber of Darkness and Tower of Shadows. By 1971, at age 19, he was fully involved in writing established superhero stories.
He’s most famous for helping create the Marvel character The Punisher, working with John Romita Sr. and Ross Andru. He also wrote some of the most important and memorable events in Spider-Man history, including the heartbreaking death of Gwen Stacy, killed by the Green Goblin.

People across social media are celebrating the remarkable career of the celebrated comic book creator. One fan shared on X, praising his incredible early success: “Many writers strive their whole lives for a single iconic story. Gerry co-created The Punisher, Firestorm, and Power Girl, and also wrote the famous ‘The Night Gwen Stacy Died’ – all before he even turned twenty-five! He was a true genius.”
“RIP, thank you for co-creating a legend,” another said.
Fans can expect a new hour-long special featuring the Punisher in May 2026. The story will pick up right after the events of Season 2 of Daredevil.
Co-writer John Bernthal says the upcoming project will be a completely unfiltered and intense experience, allowing him to fully explore the character of Frank Castle in the way he’s always envisioned.
