Okay, things are really picking up in ‘Margo’s Got Money Troubles‘! You can totally feel David E. Kelley’s style coming through now – you know, the guy behind shows like ‘Ally McBeal’, ‘Boston Legal’, and ‘The Practice’? With just two episodes left, it’s clear we’re diving into a legal battle, and honestly, it’s exciting! He just knows how to build drama, especially after his recent success with ‘Presumed Innocent’. I can’t wait to see how this all plays out!
Margo’s current custody battle is stirring up painful memories for both of her parents. Shyanne is devastated to realize her worries have come true, and her daughter’s career is already creating problems for the family. Shyanne’s past regrets and embarrassment about working at Hooters are brought back to the surface, culminating in a heated argument with Mark’s mother, Elizabeth, while they wait for news after a mediation session. Elizabeth launches a harsh verbal attack on Shyanne, accusing Margo of manipulating Mark and making crude remarks about her. She then compares Margo to Shyanne, suggesting she shares similar traits. Shyanne is deeply offended by these comments.
Honestly, watching that waiting room scene felt a bit like Elizabeth was deliberately stirring up trouble with Shyanne, but things quickly shifted inside. Margo definitely inherited her parents’ fiery temper, and even though Lace kept trying to calm her down, she kept snapping at Mark. But the real gut punch came when Margo faced a total reversal of fortune. Mark, who once built her up – admittedly with ulterior motives, but still – was now systematically tearing her down, and it was chillingly calm. He just laid out all her deepest fears about being a good mother and losing everything. He flat-out told her she wasn’t fit to parent and that her work on OnlyFans would impact every part of her life. The way he talked about his son being exposed to her friends and lifestyle? It was just… awful.
Let’s consider the concern that Bodhi is unsafe in the environment surrounding Margo’s work. While past episodes showed Margo creating the HungryGhost videos with KC, Rose, Susie, and Jinx in a fun and lighthearted atmosphere – even with some casual drug use – it wasn’t the dangerous scene Mark is painting. He’s exaggerating to damage Margo’s reputation because of his mother. However, Mark does raise a valid, though upsetting, point: Margo risks creating a public image that could negatively affect her and her child in the future. The show attempts to portray modern sex work as a creative outlet and a way for women to reclaim control over their bodies in a sexualized world, but the reality is often much more difficult. Things might be changing, as critic Melanie McFarland recently wrote in Salon about the increasing mainstream acceptance of platforms like OnlyFans, as seen in both Margo and Euphoria. Currently, though, we only see Margo’s perspective on Mark’s argument, not how the mediator reacts to it.
I’m just heartbroken for Margo. She’s reeling right now, completely upset and scared, and honestly, it feels like things are only going to get worse. We’ve discussed how this situation was stirring up painful memories for her parents, but it’s Jinx who’s really struggling. I, like so many of us, was really hoping he’d stay on track, but he’s relapsed, and now the whole family is in real trouble. It’s just devastating.
We’ve discussed how Nick Offerman brilliantly portrays Jinx’s inner pain, especially when he’s alone, and this scene is the culmination of that. While Margo and Shyanne are in court for the custody hearing, Jinx is practically unresponsive, lying in bed. Susie tries to cheer him up, suggesting they go outside, gently pointing out how his sadness is affecting everyone, and even showing off her impressive new Shadowheart costume. But nothing seems to reach him. He’s devastated not only because he can’t be there for his daughter due to his attack on Mark, but also because the hearing reminds him of abandoning Margo – and likely his other children – in the past. He’s really falling apart.
Finding Jinx unconscious in the bathtub with a needle in his arm was shocking, but not entirely unexpected. Though a familiar scene, it immediately raised my heart rate and anxiety. Margo and Susie understandably panicked. Surprisingly, Margo tried to get Jinx out of the tub before giving him the naloxone – the overdose reversal medication she’d thankfully prepared. As you might guess, two small women struggling to lift a large, unconscious man out of a slippery tub didn’t go well. Jinx fell backward, nearly pulling Margo under with him, before they finally managed to get him on the floor. Margo yelled at Susie to start CPR – seriously, Margo, be nicer to Susie! – and then administered the naloxone, which thankfully revived him. The scene ends with a shot of the bathroom, and Bodhi screaming in the background. It’s a chaotic environment, and definitely not suitable for a baby.
I always had a feeling it was Mark, and it seems someone else suspected him too. The day after Susie and Margo helped Jinx clear out his belongings, and Shyanne generously offered him a key to her apartment – which she was using mostly for storage, honestly – Jinx and Margo came back to a really unsettling sight: Child Protective Services was there, investigating Bodhi. It was a total shock, and I couldn’t believe what was happening.
As a therapist who works with people facing addiction, I’ve seen many cases where Child Protective Services is also involved. Just like someone working in sex work isn’t automatically a bad parent, using drugs doesn’t automatically make someone a bad person or caregiver. However, Jinx’s overdose was frightening, and having drugs in the house with a baby is a serious concern, as Susie points out. Jinx understands he’s nearing a breaking point and has put Margo in a difficult position. It’s incredibly hard to stop using something that provides emotional relief, so I was really impressed that Jinx took this seriously and immediately started a methadone program – a great step towards recovery!
Before Jinx can officially move out, Child Protective Services arrives, and his actions come under scrutiny as well. He surprisingly seems familiar with the process, urging Margo to cooperate and immediately owning up to his addiction. From Margo, Jinx, and Susie’s point of view, the visit feels almost frightening. The CPS workers thoroughly search the apartment and closely watch Margo as she cares for Bodhi. While changing his diaper, Margo feels like she’s performing – both for the worker and for her baby. She’s acutely aware of everything that might be seen as a sign of neglect, from the number of toys to how she sets up the changing station and the diaper rash cream she uses. But in Bodhi’s eyes, she’s all smiles and gentle touch.
Just when everything seemed to be going well, the caseworker unexpectedly announced that everyone in the house, including Margo’s child, Jinx, would need to pass a drug test. The way she delivered the news highlighted a frustrating reality: systems designed to help can often cause further pain. While Claudette, the caseworker, is simply doing her job – likely with a detached manner due to past experiences – it doesn’t ease Margo’s burden. The episode ends with Margo holding her child, feeling lost in a system that prioritizes procedures over understanding the full picture.
Tip Menu
Although the episode dealt with serious themes, the initial scene with Lace provided some much-needed humor. Michelle Pfeiffer delivered the line about “impressing the coeds with his college intellectual… stuff” brilliantly, and Jinx’s perfectly timed “… Okayyyy” response was pure comedic gold.
Michelle Pfeiffer truly shined in this episode, alongside a fantastic cast of leading ladies. The scene with Pfeiffer, Nicole Kidman, and Elle Fanning in the elevator was particularly memorable, and the confrontation between Marcia Gay Harding and Pfeiffer was incredibly intense.
