
Videos are circulating on X showing a man reportedly setting fire to the road at Shibuya Scramble Crossing in Tokyo, a well-known and incredibly busy intersection.
Shibuya Scramble Crossing is a famous landmark in Tokyo, and during busy times, around 1,000 to 2,500 people cross it every two minutes. That’s why the fire on Friday night was so concerning, as videos of it spread quickly online.
Okay, so thankfully everyone’s alright – no one got hurt. Apparently, the guy turned himself in to the police, and they took him into custody. Glad it didn’t escalate!

The Shibuya Incident – April 3, 2026
TBS reports that a fire started around 9 p.m. on April 3rd at the Shibuya crossing. A man is suspected of pouring a flammable liquid, possibly kerosene, onto the road and setting it on fire before running away. Firefighters put out the flames within about 15 minutes, and thankfully, no one was hurt.
Videos circulating on X show flames burning on the road at a busy intersection, and many people are suggesting it may have been intentionally set on fire. TV Asahi reported that their cameras recorded someone pouring liquid on the street and then lighting it.
A fire broke out in the middle of Shibuya Crossing, the famous intersection in Tokyo. Police attempted to extinguish the flames with water, but weren’t very successful.

According to reports, the man believed to be in his 40s or 50s responsible for the fire turned himself in at Shibuya Police Station and confessed. Police are currently questioning him for blocking traffic and intend to arrest him once the details of the case are confirmed. They are also investigating why he did it and exactly what happened.
Since official information is limited at this time, we anticipate learning more once Tokyo police determine the suspect’s motivation and file any formal charges.
