A man finally had chopsticks removed from his throat after living with them stuck there for nearly ten years, despite being afraid of the operation to remove them.
Most people have accidentally bitten a fork or spoon while eating at some point. It’s unpleasant, but the pain doesn’t usually last long.
A 46-year-old Chinese man, identified as Wang, accidentally swallowed a 12cm metal chopstick almost ten years ago. Reports from China indicate the chopstick became lodged in his throat while he was drinking.
The 46-year-old was worried about surgery, so she chose to leave the metal object inside her body instead of having it removed immediately.

According to the South China Morning Post, Wang has sometimes experienced discomfort due to the object stuck in their throat. However, they experienced significant pain in early 2026, prompting a quick trip to the hospital for evaluation.
According to Dr. Huang Weipeng of Dalian hospital, a patient told him a chopstick had been stuck in his throat for eight years. Dr. Huang initially thought it had just happened, but the patient clarified the incident occurred eight years prior, according to local news reports.
Mothership reports that the 46-year-old had a small operation to remove the chopstick.

A scan of Wang’s throat was also posted online and rapidly spread across social media.
One person described being more scared of the surgery itself than of the object causing the problem – a metal chopstick lodged in their throat. Another wondered how the person was able to sleep without accidentally injuring themselves.
Fortunately, Wang recovered well from the surgery, and the chopstick hadn’t damaged his vocal cords. It was a remarkably lucky outcome.
A recent unusual medical case joins others gaining attention online. In mid-March, 42-year-old Tommy Lynch from England went to the hospital when he noticed his skin turning blue. It was discovered the discoloration was actually caused by dye from his bedsheets.
